The enigma that always gets me regarding getting old is that the average age of death is rising continually, in many ways thanks to medical advances in health care such as cancers and such.

The big push seems to be to keep people alive as long as possible, but when it comes to looking after the older generation we fall flat on our faces.

There are massive holes in pension funds, governments are pushing retirement ages up to help combat this, and the majority of care homes for the elderly are notoriously underfunded and mismanaged, here in the UK anyway.
The French are rioting in the streets because the government just raised the retirement age**. They didn't get to vote on it either.
It was done under the "Emergency powers."

**Except for the police, who are expected to quell the riots.

Hello; Saw a bit of that. A thing was the older age will still be younger than in the USA for SS. Early 60's I think.

I remember one old engineer who was like the senior guru at Manlift. He took a little nap after lunch every day.
They tried to wake him at 5 PM one day and he hadn't survived the afternoon.

I retired at 61. It was time to give the new guys the wheel.
I got to "go out on top".
Not when they were waking me up at my desk at 5PM.

I'm not surprised the French are piss*d off Ulu Ulu . If you scroll down to the retirement age table it shows that their retirement age has jumped from 62 to 67 overnight!!

Ours has been going up too, but very very slowly. Overnight is a bitter pill to swallow.

I've noticed an alarming similarity at my place of work. We have a lot of outside hauliers come and go, dropping their goods off and picking up loads.

Over the years drivers who once retired, due to financial hardship, have gone back to their driving jobs. A couple of them are into their 70's, and they're driving fully laden HGV's up to a potential maximum of 44 tonnes.

I don't know whether they have to go through rigorous medicals and such to get their licences back, and further tested annually to determine whether they can do the job.

The potential for disaster is certainly there in the transport sector, other sectors will no doubt have issues too with elderly workers.

Frances retirement age went from 62, to 64.

Most of the people I saw rioting in the streets appeared to be in their 20’s. Lol

There is some logic there, lol. By the time those 20 year olds reach retirement age it could be 85 the way things are going. No wonder they're rioting!

Incidently Neil, that information I tagged on regarding the jump from 62 to 67? Is that to be "stretched" out over the coming years then? It says 2023 on the table, as if it's been one sudden big jump.

I suspect that 67 was a mistake on the authors part.

This year for the first time, Canada has more people over the age of 65 than under age 15, which is creating a massive gap in skilled labor, and the future economy. The only way out will be a work force built on immigrants. It's already begun. Good for the baby boomers with healthy pensions, not so good for everyone else.
