So my LFS got a almsot 2 foot ripsaw catfish just left outside in a bucket! So sad, my LFS can't really care for it, I have a 8x3x3 with my ray arowana, pbass and a gar. I know they are pretty docile and I wanna get him bc nobody is going to buy this guy and he will be crammed in a little tank there, how long could he last in my 8x3x3

as far as i know, ripsaw catfish do not grow as fast as RTCs. Your tank is three feet wide so it will be fine in it for a few months as long as the water conditions are kept pristine. I suggest you rescue it immediately before it dies. If you can't manage to arrange a bigger home in a few months after rescuing it then post a thread in the MFK marketplace and give it away to someone with a large tank for free.

IME they either grow very quickly or fairly slow… ive had em hit 24”+ in a cple yrs and i also had a 28”er that stayed that size for 8-9yrs. Rolling the dice with an 8’x3’ isnt that terrible of a decision lol… 50/50 shot of it working out for a long time

How long would I realistically be able too house him in the 8x3? I mean when he hits about the 3 foot mark, ill have to rehome him, maybe try to find a aqaurium to take him

Its a craps shoot… it could stay 28-30” for many yrs… it could hit 36” in a year or two just the same. If it was dropped off in a bucket i doubt it was even 24”. Probably have 3-5 yrs. Thats just a guess tho u could make it 10yrs to 36”… In “olden times” it was pretty common to see a 3’er in a 180gal. All depends what u like keeping and if u want a glass banger in ur 8’x3’. Im not the fish police like most people these days. If u like it… get it and enjoy it. If not… don’t make someone elses problem your own 🤷🏻‍♂️

I agree. Some don’t get all that large, recently there was a 30” one in a shop near me, it was ten years old.
I believe there is so much more to the oxydoras genus, than has been reported.
but I believe russ has hit the nail on the head.
From person experience. If it’s jet black, you’ve got yourself a 4ft+ fish, if it’s the standered green/grey colour, it’s a 30-40” fish.

wednesday13 wednesday13 Rpul Rpul Thank you guys! I am glad I stumbled across your posts. I have one rescue niger that has remained at or under 2ft for the last 2 years, not growing. I didn't understand why. I thought something was seriously wrong with it because until that guy, ia had had dozens of nigers who got to 3ft easily in under 5years.

Rpul, they always all been same color for me, including the little guy. I'd like to get a kneri to compare but they are never in the trade.

Growth rate could depend on a few factors with number one probably being water change schedule,in your tank you will have to bump up your water change schedule as that two footer may add quite a bit to the bio load.
