I'll probably paint it in semi gloss instead. That way I won't need two products to seal. Have a nice rust/terra cotta orange color in mind that should compliment the tank and my office. A gallon seems like a lot but raw wood soaks up stain/paint. A good layer is best for protection. It's less expensive and messy than tint/clearcoat too.

That is nice work! And I love that nice big opening on the side; plenty of room to insert a goodly number of concrete blocks... :ROFL:

Ever consider putting the background at an angle of say 30°.
Nah. Aesthetically doesn't work as well with a boxy configuration and would look way too busy. The vertical actually stabilizes the pattern and makes the box look even bigger. If I ran it horizontal it would 'flatten' the cube effect because your eye would go sideways. An angle would look choppy with the pattern and make it look like gift wrap.
