Slade's son Brutus appears to be headed for the all time family size record. Bigger than Hulk. Bigger than Tank. Bigger than Stripey. I would not have thought it possible. His build is completely different, like solid muscle as opposed to chubby/chunky. And his head is huge. He's now getting a hump as well.

One word. Ludicrous!

I don't have an official measurement on Brutus but eyeballing him compared to others I've put the ruler to

6-7 inches in length
Over 4 inches tall
1 1/2 inches thick
His head is 1/3 the size of his body
he almost looks like a saucer plate when turning

His length is comparable to his father and brothers but it's the height that makes him completely stick out along with his huge head. He's a late bloomer getting a hump. Brutus is pretty mild tempered (for a CA) though he has his moments. Kind of neutral aggression and generally will move aside from a fight. But he seems to use his size for intimidation without fighting.

This even works on his grandfather Mongo, he-who-is-an-ultimate-nutbar. Mongo won't go after Brutus at all any more...it's almost like "f-c it, you're too big." then he goes about his buisness. Although Mongo did have tolerance for Brutus growing up, even allowed him in his area (something Mongo's sons couldn't do).

His large striped cousins will take an occasional swipe to make him move, but only when Brutus has his back turned. None of them will face him head on. Maybe its that big ol' head.

The only 2 fish in the tank not intimidated by Brutus: his father Slade and brother Squiggy. Slade has more of a boss attitude and Squiggy is more naturally aggressive. At times they will nudge Brutus around.

Brutus still appears to be growing. It's bananas at this point.

Bad news.

The hrp with the bad lip? Now it's two...he's coming out. Can't close mouth. Y'all know the deal...but this time I'm good with putting the fish down. I doubt if any treatment I try will be any more effective than before. Will ID the fish when I catch it.

It's another big striped male...there's something strange going on with that phenotype I can't put a finger on. This will be the 5th one with disease/bacterial issues. Same environmental conditions as the pinks but I haven't lost one pink to disease (knock on wood). More affected by stressors are the stripes? I dunno.

No losses of striped FEMALES to disease either.

I wish we had some fish biologists here...maybe they could provide insight. I'm just baffled at this point.

Could there be a connection between immune resistance and sterility? With one exception all the large striped males are sterile. And the fertile one Stripey lost to ducklip.

None of the pink males are sterile. Some kind of funky genetic coding going on?

Losses (all large striped males)

Buddy (infection/ducklip)
Tank (infection/popeye)
Hulk (ducklip)
Stripey (infection/ducklip)
Bruce (assassin hit)

++++

Scooter? (not Id yet) (apparent ducklip)

Maybe this guy knows what's going on...

Sucks you’re losing all those big males. For columnaris, I used to have some luck with acriflavine but I can’t find the stuff anymore.

I now use Seachem Kanaplex + Furan 2 together with good results. It’s a hard disease to treat

I think I have some kanaplex...will have to check. I've heard some people use peroxide but I'm not sure how that will work without killing the fish. Maybe a methylene dip or swab? I tried metro, salt, and kanamycin before but nothing made a dent.

Right now I'm doing another drain so I can catch big lip. Seeing the same signs, tatty like fins. Body is intact so far. Fish is swimming around the tank and not sitting. It was head shaking the other day but has stopped that behavior.

Furan 2 not readily available due to toxicity, at least not here.

will poke around for acriflavine...problem is this stuff moves so fast by the time you get medicine the fish is gone.

Would this be effecttive?

One way to find out…
I used seachem polyguard with success against suspected columnaris. One of the components was nitrofuratoin iirc.

If I’m not mistaken, ruby reef rally pro contains acriflavine.

I've ordered the med but a different brand because most will take a month to deliver. I've identified the hrp, it's Bubba. He's currently in a bucket with salt. I siphoned the sand in the 125 (again) and did a third fill up in as many days. He appears to be in decent shape compared to the other losses (fingers crossed). The article mentioning this particular bacteria thrives in high oxygenation is an eye opener. You would think the opposite would be true.

Bubba is in a 'quiet' bucket, no aeration or heat. He seems relaxed. I hope he'll be the first success story.

Update on Bubba and I'm not sure it's a good one.

He seems to be holding his own. He's in a dark bucket with minimal light and quiet. I gave him a second salt treatment this morning. Tested his appetite with a pellet but no response. I wasn't really surprised but thought I'd try it.

At the time I lifted him out to get a better view of his mouth. It's definitely enlarged, but not as bad as what happened with Hulk. This evening though I saw something concerning. He has what appears to be a white spear in each nostril area? Did not see that this morning. I added Kanaplex to his salt bath. The other medication should be arriving tomorrow.

He's not sitting on the bottom and has normal posture but I don't like this at all.
