Here’s some picks of them eating and my red shoulder sev sneaking in there. They’re all eating great and they’ve started thickening up a little. I think the endli, bam bam has already gotten a little bigger lol. The ornate, Leopold has definitely gotten a bit more bold and seems active around dusk and when foods out.

I’ve got more questions lol!!
my endli still has external gills. He’s about 5-6inches ish will they go away or is that something I should watch for?

what are your guys experience with ornate bichir growth rates? I know endlis are the fastest growers correct? What’s the growth rate of the weeksii?

Generally speaking, upper jaws should look fine on black substrate. Although it'll vary depending on individual, some are naturally darker or lighter than others.
Any idea why that is? Is it from the area they come from or are upper jaws just more acquainted to the darker substrate?

Growth rate for bichirs will vary depending on various factors such as genetics, waterchange/water quality, diet/feeding frequency, etc. The thing with bichirs is their growth rate is generally not linear/consistent like other fish.

As for why, I don't know the science behind it but generally upper jaw's pattern doesn't get too affected by substrate change (even on white, most will look fine). Meanwhile most lower jaws will camouflage more, but again comes down to individuality. Some lower jaws are not affected by substrate change as well.
