To summarize, this system uses the wasted space in an over flow as a great bio tower/pre filter. My feelings are: If I’m pumping the water up from the sump every inch back down should be used to filter. My overflows have covers and it’s really not noisy going through all that media. Bonus, very low maintenance and the filter floss is super cheap. I buy 10 foot rolls of the stuff and cut them to fit.
FYI The state of Arizona and specifically Phoenix has an escaped population of many birds. Lovebirds thrive in Phoenix. Its most likely Rosy- faced lovebirds. You ID’d correctly
The most impressive part aside from the fish and plumbing is that nitrates are less than 5ppm. Mind blowing!!
Update on the pink filter system im using as a pre filter in my overflow area. I love it but the pink filter floss has no structure. It folds over and loses its “cup” shape. I’m trying to come up with a brace contraption to pin the filter floss to the sides of the overflow so it will maintain the cup shape. Below is what’s happening that bothers me:
