150 Gallon Wild Discus tank thread

Hey all. Getting this 159 gallon fat boy setup to add some wild type discus to in the near future along with some stingrays.

Getting the tank filled up this evening. Really debating getting a thin layer of white sand for the bottom mainly because I have to grow out some juvie geophagus sveni that will be starting out still around 1 inch in this tank with the discus so they need some sand to sift around in. Cleanup will still be plenty easy so I’m not too worried about adding the sand. What do you guys think.? Sand or no sand? I’ve always grown out discus in strictly barebottom tanks but can’t imagine a little sand hurting. The discus will be around the 4 to 5 inch range when I get them too so they won’t be quite as fragile as juvies would be.

Update time. Wild discus will be arriving this Friday. The group will consist of royal capieau and iripixi. Thinking of adding some Heckels in the near future or more iripixi. The iripixi are stunning looking fish so we will see. Will be adding the white sand before the discus are added to the tank as well along with the Seiryu stone and other driftwood.

I’m also growing out and raising F1 geophagus sveni Rio Parana and F1 guinacara Sphenozona red spotted from Suriname. Also in the tank is a L160 cactus pleco, lda07 andan l014.

A little more info on the setup.

I’m raising these fish in a kh of 3-4 degreeswith ro mixed with a little well water and Kent marine RO right. Keeping the kh at 3-4degrees will help eliminate any ph swings. The ph is around 6.2. I’ll be doing about 4 to 5 water changes per week for good growth and to keep things real nice and prestine.

I’ll update a video once the discus are allsettled in.

Great looking tank & love the stock selection. Never kept wilds, but I've read most keepers of wilds use a thin sand layer, domestics not so much. Also haven't seen the iripixi location before. Post some good pics when they settle in

I’ll make sure to do that. The iripixi are quite rare so they cost a pretty penny but they’re amazing looking fish so I’m quite excited for them.

The discus are gonna look great, what kind of rays are you gonna keep? I didn’t think there where any small ones that could do with that type of footprint. I don’t know a whole lot about freshwater rays other then I’d love to keep some one day far off in the future.

Well it’s a 150 gallon deep tank. I believe it’s 30 inches deep. Haven’t figured out what days I’ll be getting yet. Open for advice though. Once I get the tank fully Aquascaped I’ll have a better idea if there will be room for the rays. I need to let the sveni grow a bit more first as well before adding any rays.

Added the white sand last night and seiryu stone. Driftwood is arriving today so will be adding more of that once it arrives. On my way to pickup the wild discus from the airport right now.

Looks fantastic! Looking forward to the discus.

When you say its 30 inch deep is that the height or front to back? I think 30 is ok for some of the small species of ray but you might want to rething the decor layout to give them as much of the floor as possible

30 deep. But ya I’ll figure that out once I cross that bridge. Just focusing on getting the discus settled in first. Rays won’t be for another few months.

I personally would not do rays in that small of a tank. The width of the tank is ok, but the overall footprint isnt ideal I don't think. I personally would do some nice plecos and or geos.

Cant wait to see the wild discus. Wilds are better than most of the created ones I think.
