hmm, the heating is a real pain in the A$*. I still think that until I can get a drip system up and running I would like to have a system set up to heat water as it comes into the garage when I do water changes. Right now I just run warm tap water and anything more than my 350 gal in water changes takes a long time because I run all the water out of the hot water heater and have to wait on it to heat up again so that I can finish filling up. Can't do more than around 200 gals worth of changes with the hot water heater. With the wall mounted 7kw I can do as big a water change as I'd like without worrying about running out of hot water. I can just set it to 80 F and run cold water through it and have it instant 80 when it enters the tank. I do like your persistance though lol. I will definitely have plenty of time to think about it. I'll have to weigh the pros and cons. Starting to think that just running an electric heater element into a compartment of the sump will work. Probably just going to throw a titanium heater in it for the summer though. Simple and gives me time lol. As thick as the walls are I'm hoping that it will be pretty efficient at holding heat in. Not sure if there's a formula for how fast water will cool down through a rubber coated 3" thick walled wooden tank that's completely enclosed!

On another note I was thinking I could charge the neighborhood kids a small fee to ride the big boy!?! hehehe:naughty:

The coil of tubing connected to the tankless is essentially a heating element; a safe one. Nothing toxic comes in contact with the water. it's my understanding, that when the thermostat comes on the water circulates through the tubing and returns back to the tankless water heater to be heated.

Basically you guys have the same idea just one of you uses a tankless heater and the other one uses a tank? Does the hot water heater need new water or can you just keep heating and returning the same water forever? hmm, much food for thought. I'll do one or the other, just not sure which yet lol.

I agree the tankless hot water heater is a great option but heres a thought. if you set it up right you can use the tankless as some have suggested in a closed loop but also use it to fill the tank. the water in the loop would get changed whenever you did water changes so it shouldn't have issues. I agree running the dirty tank water through the heater would be a bad Idea as the buildup and issues it would cause would drastically reduce the life of the unit and void any warantee. so set up the closed loop with the tankless heater the thermostat would control the circ. pump and the Solenoid valve and a couple Manual Valves would make filling the tank a breaze and still save the life of the Heater. I drew a pic but in my head it looks simpler than the drawing this setup the heater would very seldom run and would give you the flexability you need. just a thaught. you may not need to run the cold line past the heater but its just how I put it. does that make sense? I'm basing this design off how my house is heated.

I know I have looked into the solar heat option but for me the killer was space as you need enough room for storage to maintain your system overnight unless you just used it to supplement your system but up in my area that wouldn't cover much of the day in the coldest part of the year.

You might want to look in to a pool heater. Not sure on price difference but you could cycle the water through it with out too many worries. Just an idea.
