So last night my gorgeous wife let me buy all the stuff I needed for this minus the heater. Shipping costs came out a little more than advertised, but that's the name of the game. So I bought 5 gals of epoxy resin, 10 gals of gel coat, about a gallon of black dye for the gelcoat, 2 4' x 2' panes of acrylic at 1", 1 2' x 2' 1" acrylic, then 3 pieces of 2' x 4' at 1/8" for the top, and one will be cut in half. I also purchased 2 gate valves that will mount flush with the back of the tank. I think that's everything for now. I'll still have to buy some more plywood, and barrels, ect before I can call it complete, but this is the major stuff that I need to get it ready for a fill test, and I have everything to get 1/2 of the filtration ready to go. I'm happy!!!
I hope that's a typo... there's a small problem with epoxy and gel-coat, being that polyester resins will not cure in the presence of epoxy, so if you plan on gelcoating over epoxy, you will have some major problems. I know you were talking about 5gal of polyester resin before though, so I'm hoping it's a typo.

Hmm, never heard of that before. If I am letting the epoxy cure first would I really have a problem? I was undecided on which to use and didn't know that there was any difference except everything shows that epoxy was better than the fiberglass resin I was going to use before. It's no typo. If you can give me a source maybe I can get them to switch it to polyester resin. Thanks

Yeah I didn't put much stock in it either... till I built my plywood tank, I epozied inside, and gelcoated outside. Everywhere there was a drop of epoxy on the outside before I gelcoated, the gelcoat would not cure, and wiped right off... so my tank is grey on the outside, with a few plack spots/runs where the epoxy was.

You could of course dispense with the gelcoat if you're using epoxy. Epoxy **IS** the better composite in many ways, although for a project this size I'd lean towards polyester. Most epoxies have a worse effect on health in general than polyesters, even though polyesters stink to high heaven. If you just switched that over to 15gal of gelcoat and tinted it black, you could rent a compressor and HVLP gun with the difference in price and spray it on.

Why is the gel coat beter, just because you can spar it on? Do you need any thing under the gel coat?
