Wanted to create more swimming space for the temensis as I have a good feeling its gonna hit 18" in the first year, as well as add pothos to create a cover that provides subdue lighting through them to create a more biotope type feeling to the setup

I didn't know there would be that much debris from the wood and feedings under the rocks, and although it didn't alter my water quality too much I'd rather keep it the cleanest I possibly can for these cichla at adult size and sand is definitely the way to go as well as the pothos I'm gonna use as top water cover that remove nitrates as well.
This is why I rock bare bottom too, once my bass put on some size 16” plus I got tired of vacuuming gravel all the time trying to keep nitrates down it was a pita. Now bare bottom and wonderful algae growth makes my bass color pop imo and all I have to worry about is cleaning the detritus out of the sump occasionally changing 3 7”x36” filter socks once a week backflushing the poor mans ultima once every 6 to 8 months may push that to once a year it doesn’t clog and water changes
tcav88 tcav88 keep us posted I love to hear about filtration and what works. Awesome thread

Good thing you don’t live in a California lol. At 120gpd on a 450 is quiet excessive

Lol poor mans ultima is a Hayward sand filter stuffed with ultima 2 media it’s just what I call it everyone always asks me about it. I bought a 21” Hayward sand filter and three boxes of ultima 2 media to fill it 3k gph gets pumped through it the only issue is some media escapes during back wash because the holes in the multi port valve are larger than the media so I lose a tiny bit of media every time I back wash so I collect it and throw it in the sump when my media bag fills up it gets put back into the sand filter “poor mans ultima”

I bought the sand filter on sale 3 years ago for $189.00 I don’t remember how much I spent on media but I know it was less than $500.00 total for the filter and media
