55g Community tank "Centerpiece fish".

I'm Getting a 55g sometime this week and I plan on making It a community tank. I need some help deciding on a "Centerpiece Fish". I would like It to be colorful but other than that I don't have any other preferences. I was going to get some bolivian rams but they don't seem to have much color, What would you recommend? (I'm getting the 75 gallon tank from my other thread In a couple of months)
I second the rainbow cichlids, I just finished my 75g community and I have two male rainbow cichlids and it looks pretty good I think

Here’s a vid of my community tank with rainbow cichlids to give you an idea

If Cardinal tetras are to be a major factor in your tank, then a similar soft water cichlid may need to be considered.
Most cardinals prefer soft water, with a pH not much higher than 6.
This may determine what type cichlid you use as a centerpiece, most Central American cichlids would not thrive in that low pH water.
But Amazonian cichlids like Apistogramma, and Rams would, and will also fit well in that size tank (and not eat the cardinals).
Many other South Americans that get larger, will consider Cardinals treats.

How about 3 amazon puffers? They aren’t the easiest, but are one of the only puffers that don’t kill their tankmates. They do stress easily and can be harassed by other fish though. Neons are corys would be fine with them though. They are really fun and make a good centerpiece.

If the 55 is a starter tank to become a 75 within months you have a lot of options, actually, if you're not starting out with adults as the centerpiece fish. If the 55 was to be permanent, an option not yet mentioned would be a Laetacara species. I kept them with a variety of fish, larger and smaller, including cardinals and emperor tetras.

The 55g would be a permanent tank Im gonna make It a community type tank while the 75 Is going to a tank for a SB Flowerhorn (maybe a bonsai).

Im not set on anyfish I picked the cardinals since the tank was going to have a pair of bolivian rams in it but since I am looking for a different centerpiece fish I will definitely need to consider a different a different type of schooling fish. (fo far agree for either the electric blue acara or the rainbow cichlid). The main issue is all my fish will becoming fro either petsmart/petco or the super pet market that opened near me recently so I will to focus on the more common centerpiece fish.

I’ve seen Electric blue acaras At both petsmart and petcos very commonly. Rainbows are a bit harder to find, but I’ve seen them at petcos once or twice. A bit easier to get them online.

Is there a way to tell the sex on rainbow and electric acaras when they are young or are they more of a wait and see fish.
