I second the rainbow cichlids, I just finished my 75g community and I have two male rainbow cichlids and it looks pretty good I thinkI'm Getting a 55g sometime this week and I plan on making It a community tank. I need some help deciding on a "Centerpiece Fish". I would like It to be colorful but other than that I don't have any other preferences. I was going to get some bolivian rams but they don't seem to have much color, What would you recommend? (I'm getting the 75 gallon tank from my other thread In a couple of months)

If the 55 is a starter tank to become a 75 within months you have a lot of options, actually, if you're not starting out with adults as the centerpiece fish. If the 55 was to be permanent, an option not yet mentioned would be a Laetacara species. I kept them with a variety of fish, larger and smaller, including cardinals and emperor tetras.
If Cardinal tetras are to be a major factor in your tank, then a similar soft water cichlid may need to be considered.
Most cardinals prefer soft water, with a pH not much higher than 6.
This may determine what type cichlid you use as a centerpiece, most Central American cichlids would not thrive in that low pH water.
But Amazonian cichlids like Apistogramma, and Rams would, and will also fit well in that size tank (and not eat the cardinals).
Many other South Americans that get larger, will consider Cardinals treats.
