A new start for my main tank?

Imo goldfish need a 55-75g max. They are social fish, and their bio load is super heavy. Goldfish would look great in a large tank.
I think you mean minimum, not max? But I agree completely, the only good goldfish is a big goldfish :), and they all get big. I picked up several 70gallon tanks recently at such a good price I couldn't say no; using them as sumps, cichlid fry growouts, etc. and when I set them up I couldn't imagine shoehorning more than one or two big goldfish in that size tank.

And besides...the idea is to decide what I will do with my existing tank, all set up and ready to go in its existing spot. I sure as heck am not looking to get yet another small tank just for the sake of having it.

Eventually, you get to the point where you do not need or want to keep every fish in the world all at the same time, and don't need or want to have an aquarium in every square foot of your house where one might possibly fit. Less is more. :)

You mean min, I assume?
That is unless your pond will max out at 75 g (at this rate maybe it will)!
Pond? Pond???

Oh, yeah...I thought that had passed into the mists of legend after all this time. Have the Santa Ana winds drifted that little depression in the ground full of sand yet?

Come on...I began this post by agreeing with you, Shadow...you had to know that something would follow...:)

Didn't mean to be negative, I'm just jealous i don't have room for a 180 and am limited somewhat my fish options by size. As long as it makes you happy that's what matters and simple is very satisfying.
Didn't sound negative at all, no worries.

For the record, the tank in question is a 360, not a 180. And it's the only one that size that I have, or will have, so I'm agonizing a bit over how to utilize it.

Doesn't matter how big or how small one's tank is, there will always be limitations based upon fish and tank size. With a footprint of 8 x 3 feet, I don't think that there is a cool-water Goonch that will be a good fit; they all seem too big. I suspect that is an itch that will remain unscratched...but, dang, is it ever itchy! :)

Just an update on this thread. The summer is still young, and my fish still have several weeks of warm weather to enjoy their outdoor vacations in their stock tanks. My 360 gallon plywood tank has just had a fresh new EPDM liner installed, my first time experimenting with this technique in a plywood tank, and it now sits looking at me empty of fish and full of reproach.

I had settled upon installing my Burbot into this tank...but then ran afoul of this province's draconian regulations regarding the keeping of native fish, resulting in his release. I am still toying with the idea of a Chinese Wels catfish...but since I have never even laid eyes on one in person, this doesn't seem likely.

But, honestly, I have my apurensis Jelly Cat and I don't think any other monster fish will replace him as Top Dog in my fishroom and in my affections. So...it looks like I am indeed becoming a Goldfish keeper!

I have a neighbour who graciously gave me...or maybe she conned me into taking them, not really sure...about a dozen goldfish, plain old feeders, with the longer tails and fins that in my mind distinguish a Comet from the less-sleek Common variety. Her thought was that Lumpy (the Jelly Cat) would enjoy them for a snack. Instead, I plopped them into my inground pond, which was totally fish-free but very mature and well-planted. It's sometimes difficult to remove fish from there in the fall, so I..heartless monster that I am...figured if anything was destined to freeze to death come winter, it might as well be some free goldfish.

The fish were surprisingly healthy-looking when they went in, perhaps 2 inches in length and very active. They are now, after only a couple of months, all at least 4 inches long and they look terrific! Very tame, coming to the surface for food, spectacular colouration; they are so trusting that netting them out should be child's play when the time comes.

So that's the current plan. My prized main aquarium, the centerpiece of my hobby in terms of indoor tanks...is being devoted to a handful of free goldfish. I'm quite looking forward to seeing them in there. I'm past the point of oohing and aahing over monster predator fish, I certainly don't want a gladiatorial arena in my tank and I have never considered rarity as a valid reason for wanting something; I don't give a thought to what other people think or what's considered popular. I like watching my fish go about their business peacefully and serenely, and I am forced to admit that goldfish offer just the sort of thing I enjoy. Aside from feeders in the dim distant past, and a couple of small goldies in one of my first tanks, back when I got around on a bicycle...I have never actually kept goldfish. So for me, this is a new thing, and that's always nice.

There will be a few other fish in there with them, chosen for their similar requirements of water types and temperatures, but...it's gonna be a goldfish tank.

Of course, now that I have stated that, my pond will likely be struck by a wayward meteor...

I do feel your pain.
I too have been given a bunch of these long fin commets, even a white one with a red head and when I asked how long I was looking after them for I was told “just for a little while while we build an extension and then decide if we still want a pond”.
IF - not where to put it!
But you can’t just “loose” 8 goldfish with a 4 year old great niece ! One ok, two maybe, but eight mmmmmm something fishy going on now and they know it (see what I did there!). So I now have a perfectly good 80 ukg corner tank (not quite the show tank yours is I know, but all my tanks have a purpose) housing them whilst I try my hardest to ignore their breeding attempts to entice me into good colour morphs.

Good luck in not ending up with five times more than you started with!

Although at least then you can always get that Goonch on limiting numbers grounds!

Lol, my tank is hardly a "show" tank; it's a plywood box with an unfinished exterior, sitting on an unfinished stand made of 2x4's and 2x6's, and virtually every piece of ancilliary hardware has "Rubbermaid" emblazoned on it. Virtually nobody ever sees it except me, my dog and occasionally my wife and granddaughters.

I don't know about getting any more goldfish, but I may be forced to start a thread extolling their virtues if my growing admiration for them continues.

And...if they give me an excuse for a goonch...:)

Ya know...people never fail to disappoint.

Our neighbour, who is in most respects quite a sweet lady...and who "gifted" me with those feeders only a couple weeks after getting them...decided that she had acted in too much haste...so her original fish are still chilling in my pond, but she now has another dozen or so in her basement fishtank. I just don't know sometimes.

The original fish, which were in the 1.5 to 2 inch range when we got them, are all between 4 and 5 inches currently. They still have at least another two months before I need to even think about transferring them indoors.

Much to my surprise, their finnage has not kept pace with their growth; all of them appeared to my untrained eye to fit into the "comet" classification when I brought them home, with very long extended tails and fins. Now, however, their fins are all much shorter and look like plain common goldfish. Still very attractive fish, to be sure, but less sleek and graceful in appearance now than they were.

I am accused by some of aiding and abetting irresponsible fish choosing and keeping.
