I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of alternatives to filter pads for pengiuns/emporer filters. I remember seeing a post but cant remember what it said to use and I cant find it using the search.

Just sick of buying those damn things for 15 bucks seems like there is a house hold product that would do the same job cheaper.

Also pros and cons of the "real" pads against the alternative.

Thanks!

Try kensfish.com I get almost all my suppplies from there. they have cartridges w/ and w/o carbon name brand and alternative

I don't use them because of the carbon inside. Just buy sheet of blue filter pad from your lfs for like $7 and cut it to size.

Im cheap. I just cut the plastic back part where the carbon is, dump it out and wash and reuse......well.....pretty much forever. But the blue pads will work too

buy the filter pad, cut to size, or I use the Aquaclear sponges, I usually double up and run it without the carbon bag.

I used cotton stuffing in mine. It sticks together when it's wet... And it doesn't separate and Disperse throughout the tank either.

When I put sand in the tank it Was so fine it cleared it up fast!

^ This ^ is what I do.

All great ideas. Now this large blue filter pad. Can this be bought at home depot? Is it called something special. I've never seen these at my lfs and looked for them online but didn't find anything maybe I'm not a very good googler.

Petco and petsmart has them too. They're just big blue pads that you can cut.
