Start with two in the pond and wait a few years. ha ha

The joys of exponential growth!

I have to say that goldfish are quite tempting to young childeren and would have to bring in more $$$$ and they gotta be cheaper than stuffed animals. Theres nothing wrong with keeping them in a trash can lined with a bag as long as the water is alright and they have light. I mean they are goldfish. Monster fish keepers alone is responsible for killing I would guess hundereds of thousands of gold fish. Someones fish is probibly eating some right now. If you were a gold fish would you rather be thrown in a tank with a monster or take your chance with a kid?

I'd rather be eaten right away, then die slowly being poisoned by my own waste.

Well then you must hate being a human

How many people at a fair do you think will get into an in depth conversation about where they are going to keep a 12 cent fish??????????

White cloud mountain minnows, zebra danios, cherry barbs, rosy barbs are all much smaller cold water fish species.

Here's what I see happening all too often in the scenario in my head-Family won fish and is driving home, kids/mom/dad suggest that the fish should be freed, and fish is immediatly let go at nearest road crossing. This might not be a big deal if just on person did it, but get a family with multiple fish, or carloads of people with the same idea, and you have a new invader on your hands. For this reason, I think you should lean towards warm water fish and give them away in the warmer months. That way, when the first cold snap hits, that tropical fish that miraculously survived the summer in a little creek will die and not live on to reproduce with the other dumped fish. There are still some creeks and rivers without wild goldfish populations and they should be kept that way. White clouds and danios are also possible invaders. I don't like the idea of fish as prizes in general, but if you're going to give out "throw away fish," consider ones that once thrown away, will not establish populations in native waters.
