When my snakes refused to eat their dinner, I would occassionally give it to my RTC instead of wasting it. I wouldnt recommend it, it obviously isnt the best food and it is a nightmare with waste. I literally had to do a WC right after he digested because of the mouse.

Its not natural for most fish, but there are a few species that will naturally take small creatures that get too close, bass are known to take frogs and mice, pike are known to take muskrats and ducks. Im sure large predators around the world eat small mammals if given the chance on an empty stomach

Even that happened in the wild, it's still a sample diet and not everyday diet. It's rare for muskies and northern pikes to take on a muskrat.

Im going to be honest hear im guilty of it. When I had my alligator gars (all 3 4') they ate 200feeders a week and I had to go on vacation for a week and didnt want them to eat my florida gars so a fed them each a mouse the day before I left. Never did again but nothing bad happened.

But to the falling question I really wish I had a net over the pond cuz a possum went in and the biggest one killed it and it posioned the water with so much blood...

I used to feed my rtc frozen mice. They made it faster. It did increase the bioload more then normal. I believe in the wild large predatory cats and other fish prey on small animals alot more . Think if you were a huge predator and came across a drowned rat or bird you would eat instead of chasing a healthy fish that can out swim you.

I also used to gut and clean all the mice before feeding

Not true! The fish don't prey on birds and mammals very often in the wild. Their main diet is mostly fish and inverts. I personally watch a small red squirrel swim across a lake that has bass and muskies. It made to the shore and we caught plenty of bass and five muskies on that day. You would think that the squirrel should be in the fish's belly by now.

alot of large perdator catfish are known for eating mammals like piribias. i wasnt saying mammals make up thier entire diet but they could be a small fraction of it.

I've feed my piranhas a fuzzy mouse before. It's just a mess u have to do a huge water change after I will never do it again or really recommend it. I don't think there is any benefit to feeding fish mice either.

Muskrats and waterfowl may not be the normal diet, but certainly adds to their diet. Studies suggest that large Esox would prefer to consume prey that would take less handling time to consume. On some pike/musky lakes, studies have found that up to 6% of the large fish did have waterfowl inside their stomachs and are also blamed for up to 10% of the total yound waterfowl mortality. They would still prefer to consume easier, soft-rayed fish, but other large, "unusual" food items still contribute to a significant part of their diets. At least during certain times of the year
