Muskrats and waterfowl may not be the normal diet, but certainly adds to their diet. Studies suggest that large Esox would prefer to consume prey that would take less handling time to consume. On some pike/musky lakes, studies have found that up to 6% of the large fish did have waterfowl inside their stomachs and are also blamed for up to 10% of the total yound waterfowl mortality. They would still prefer to consume easier, soft-rayed fish, but other large, "unusual" food items still contribute to a significant part of their diets. At least during certain times of the year

Even they do take muskrats and waterfowl, it's still very small part (around 1-5%) of their diet and many of them has never had a mammal or a bird in their life which that explains why only 6% of large fish have waterfowl inside their stomachs. The fish eat birds and mammals, yes but it's still very uncommon occurance.

I also saw this in an outdoor magazine before. Quite interesting but it doesnt seem like it would work to well lol.

EDIT- Check out the link someone put on that forum of the pike eating the duck. Thats so crazy

I don't know if there's anyone willing to admit that they have enough of a home mouse problem that the occassional mouse falls into their tank.

Ahem....years ago I had one of my first tanks set up at my girlfriend's parent's house and in it was my first wolf fish...I stayed over one night and the next morning when I went down to check on the tank, there wolfie was with the butt end of a mouse protruding from it's mouth and there were guts and entrails all swirled around the filter tube.

How about it...Even with half a body it was still trying to survive.

I was at petco once and talking to the guy. So he convinced me to buy one of their frozen pinky mice to feed to my turtles. They are de gutted and completely clean of diseases according to the packaging. I fed two of them to the turtles about a month apart from each other. I had one extra pinky left so I chucked it in my cichlid/Turtle tank at the time. That was when I had a 4.5" Oscar, the two Dempseys and the three Sliders. The turtles bit the head clear off while the fish ate the floating flesh.
