anyone keeping Syncrossus berdmorei

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep two "altus" Tinfoil Barbs in with my Botias. They look good and do really well. No plans to eat them. Lol.

Can second the tinfoils. One of the best peaceful fish I've ever kept. Had them with tiger loaches before, and neither of them messed with the other. The 4yr+ pair I had died this weekend...Really miss those guys, although it does allow me to plant their tank now. Have seen tinfoils kept with nearly any other fish larger than can fit in their mouths, and they'll do perfectly fine. That's a really nice tinfoil there- haven't seen that many with those colors.

I like tinfoils, prefer schawnfeldii or however it’s spelled with the black outlines on the tails.

after a week or two i have to say these are very cool fish. they perch on everything. not as active as blue botia or clowns in a school but with some size they are going to stars of the tank. havent seen aggression but that could be because i have 12

Would love some more info and pics for these fish P PhishMon84

I'm set on Loaches for my next tank and want a big single species group.

How hardy are these compared with clowns in juvenile stage? Have you seen any signs of wasting? I'm looking at thewetspot for sourcing and they are only offering 1-1.5" fish.

Sad to report, that I have the same bad luck with posting about a fish as I do with naming a fish.

they’ve thickened up a little bit, grown maybe a half an inch. They got a little feisty with each other and now my 12 is 2. They are still active and cool when feeding, their behavior almost reminds me of longnose hawkfish in SW.

I don’t have any photos at the moment (I don’t take many, at all)

I do have a group of 9 redtail blue botia in another tank and they are only active when feeding. But very cool and have beefed up to around 4.5”

there’s some cool looking loaches out there but think long run there is a good reason clowns are so popular, likely the best for behavior and color.

Good info, thanks for sharing. If im reading right you're attributing their reduction in number to aggression? If I may ask what size tank were you growing them out in? Any details of the setup would be appreciated.

My first thought for the new tank was blue botias, but when I saw these syncrossus available I became very interested.

I got mine at similar size to what’s available to you. They went in a 20 long with sand, Anubias, pothos and some floating quick growing plant. A couple of chunks of driftwood. I had an aqua clear on the end and decent flow.

I think the aggression came at night because I never saw it

Best to buy just one Berdmorei as a show fish & add him to a group of other Botias. The dominant Berdmorei male will harrass & eventually kill all weaker conspecifics. I keep my lone Berdmorei with YoYo's & Modestas with no problems.
Berdmoreis aren't particularly fast growers, maybe an inch per year.
Here's old pics of my Berdmorei & one of my Modestas. They are much bigger now.
