most of you guys are taking the piss saying you want to get a gig
DO YOU REALY EVER THINK YOU WILL GET A TANK BIG ENOUGHT FOR THEM
then you get the realy smart guys saying they just go 2 or 3
everyone who buys them is just taking another one from the wild and killing it
and they get to 10ft+ not 4ft
it makes me sick when people even think of getting a gig as most people cant even get a big enought tank for a RTC how the hell do you think you can take care of a gig
this fish should be left in the wild were it belongs

The LFS near me has 3 I believe. They have an in ground pond in the store with a 3 year old who is GIGANTIC. The largest of them actually jumped THROUGH their wall tank and now is in the pond. The other two smaller ones (and by small I mean 4-5 feet) are in the wall tank with some 2' black pacus. It's been mentioned that if they get much bigger they fish will have to go to the aquarium.

Havn't been on here in ages and thought I'd check out this thread again......
Can't believe there are STILL people who think they can just go to an LFS, pick up one of these beauties, throw it in their 50gallon and hope for the best!

"Arapaima gigas"? Try "Arapaima arapaima"
Seems there are now 5 species of Arapaima......
1. A. gigas
2. A. agassizi
3. A. mapae
these 3 are known only from the preserved holotypes,
and have 18 or fewer caudal fin rays.
4. an undescribed species endemic to the protected Mamiraua reserve
5. Arapaima arapaima 31 caudal fin rays
All captive Arapaima are likely to be A. arapaima

any scientific data to prove this? DNA tests? any color/size differences?
if this is true, i may be able to get one,as the prohibited list says A. gigas, not these... it appears that all the biggest ones (john's, zoodiver's, etc.) all have red scales, where yours are smaller, have not much red, and more green? if i get some, don't worry i have plans for a tank 28'x13'x7' internal, so they will definately be adequately housed...
by the way john, your tank has a huge algae spot on the left window

sorry arapaimag, but i must disagree with you on this one, when they are breeding the female gets red/orange stripes as well as the male, nonbreeding males will have red stripage and thinner bodies, the females have thicker bodies and red at the base of the dorsal and anal fins, and a red edge on the tail fin. both develop bright orangeish red while breeding (watch the "Equator" episode "rivers of the sun")
