A fire eel could be a solid choice! They stay mostly at the bottom, which complements the Arowana’s top-level swimming habits. Just make sure the eel has enough hiding spots to feel secure, as they can get stressed without good shelter.
Other potential tankmates:
1. Bichirs – Polypterus species are also bottom dwellers, peaceful, and hardy enough to coexist with large fish.
2. Datnoid (Indonesian Tiger Fish) – They are relatively peaceful but can hold their own with an Arowana.
3. Clown Knife Fish – They grow large and have a calm demeanor, though they need similar water parameters.
4. Severum Cichlids – While cichlids, Severums tend to be peaceful and colorful additions to break the monotony.
Just ensure that any tankmate isn’t small enough to become a snack, as your Arowana will instinctively go for bite-sized fish! With his size, you’ve also got to keep bioload in mind since your filtration will need to handle the added waste.
