Automatic Self Cleaning Aquarium Filter

I would have to agree with ercnan...

Doing the maintenance on my tanks helps me wind down after a day at work.
For me it is not a chore or a duty, but something i really like to do...

That is an awesome system. It still requires maintenance and maintenance checks. You have to replace the indexing filter spools.

It wouldn't be hard to make but I would take the vacuum out and incorporate a drip system. The 50 micron roll would just run itself right into a trash can and be replaced as necessary. No need for back wash or vacuuming but it would cost more in filter rolls.

I've been playing with a similar system for a while now... however mine employs a continuiously cleaning membrane to remove solid waste and is FAR less automated.

I do agree that theres a real need for 'hands on' maintance. NO automated system in the world can replace years of expierance IMO.

I agree with the comments regarding that maintenance is all part of the fun, but this is probably a great alternative for those people or institutions who know nothing about proper aquarium care (or don't have the time) and yet still want an aquarium; such as offices, libraries, etc. I think in the long run it would be cheaper for them than to hire an aquarium maintenance company to come in every month.
