A friend and I went fish store hunting and found this small little place that had something called an Avocado Puffer. I've been looking on-line, but has anyone here had experience with them or know anything about them? Any information is greatly appreciated!

I found this picture of one on the internet...

Auriglobus Modestus ...

They act alot like Trigger fish.. They swim like Triggers, and nip like Triggers. Sometimes people have had success keeping them with other fish, but It's not reccomended. They are pure freshwater, and max out at about 4".

A very active fun fish, and if you choose tankmates wisely you could probably make a very nice active community tank (silver dollars or barbs maybe? fast movers for sure) .. I have seen people also put them with other puffers, but it was an isolated scenario by a very experienced puffer keeper.

I have one, it was sold as a golden puffer, and thanx to Miles's advice, I set up the tank correctly. It's been a couple of months and so far so good- I can only get it to eat crickets, nothing forzen or prepared, but I put some snails in there last night, so hopefully he'll go for that- I tried to put a baby albino bichir with it but the next day the bichir was missing a perfectly round chunck out of it's tail, so moved the little guy out. In the store where I bought it it was with another of the same type, and the other puffer was chewed ragged. ( I was there recently and the other puffer has recovered nicely)

I would love to try silver dollars or something like that in the tank.

I have one that is full grown. He is aggressive as hell and will kill or severly damage anyhting living in his tank! Funny enough I added two orange mollys in there to feed him and it has been months and he has not even nipped them! I think he is afraid of the orange because he will nip or kill everything else. Try it with yours and see if that holds true.

Mine eats anything from flakes to pellets to feeders and krill. He is a very interactive fish and will try to bite you if you put your finger in his tank. My gf loves to feed him shrimp from her hand. Overall a neat little fish, but I would not trust him with anything else other then orange mollys! lol Oh and jsut because they are fat and cumbersome looking does not mean they can move because these guys can get up and go when they see somthing they want!

I have found these called "bronze puffers" and I am very interested in setting up a 30 gallon for one, from the looks of it these are true mini-monsters!

This thread makes me want to get that species of puffer now.. I might have to start collecting them again!
