This is the amount of food that goes in to the odball tank. The obligatory tetramin flake as well as spirulina flake. The pellets are a floating trout feed formulation. The freeze dried plankton is another daily staple. All this material if not metabolised by the fish will need to be taken up by the plants once oxidized by the beneficial bacteria in the XP3.
It looks like the plants have a lot of growing to do!

Can anyone recommend a GOOD nitrate test kit. Mine reads to the nearest 10ppm and with my eyes its hard to read with any precision.
These plants are doing a great job so far. My trial tanks have less nitrate than my potable water supply! I need a good test kit to verify just how well the system really works.

Hyacinth are among the best plants for nitrate removal. Many asian arowana farms in Singapore use these plants to naturally purify rainwater for their arowana ponds.

Don't buy anything form Red Sea. They make very poor test kits, I would recommend the PinPoint electronic measurement devices for ease of use and accuracy.

I agree these plants would be great. There may be a bit of a problem with evaporation and artificial light. One of the HUGE benefits is that the roots harbour beneficial bacteria that break down nitrates and organic nutrients making them available for direct use of the plants...Symbiosis!

I found this great article that looks at the pros and cons of Water Hyacinth;

Any readers have any experience using them indoors?
