BEST Piranha for a Noob and WHY?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lucky me im in way up north and they are legal just picked up a 2-3inch rbp today

so u guys are saying that if i have 3 2 inchers in a 55 i should add about 5 more and count on a few of them dying. 1 was just killed on me 2 days ago.

you can always start with a little more when they are small, there is a chance that all will make it to adulthood, in which case you'll just have sell the ones you don't like as much or upgrade to a bigger tank

yea plan to upgrade but do u think i could get at least 2 years out of a 55 if like 5 rb's lived that long.

2 years? um...they probably get to about 8" or so the most in 2 years if you get them from like 2" or so. five 8" fish in a tank that's only 12" wide might be tight, but not impossible. the sooner you upgrade the better.

I'm guessing that these ARE NOT fish that you want to let get hungry AT ALL or the inevitability will be less of them around. Kind of a double edged sword...You don't want to feed them too much, so they don't grow TOO quickly, but...You don't want them to be hungry or you're likely to come home to a tank with less fish in than when you left for work... It looks as if EVERY shoal I've ever seen had shredded fins at the very least...

I'm starting to doubt if keeping them is even worth all of the hassles... Do Exodons F**K eack other up the same way RBPs do? I LOVE the idea of a shoaling fish that goes into feeding frenzies, but it would suck to invest so much time, and money, only to have them destroy each other in the long run.. Unfortunately there aren't the same deals on Exodons as there are on baby RBPs, but if it meant losing less fish to cannibalism, then in the end would probably be about the same price.

What do you guys think?

they will really only go after each other over territorial issues, they aren't just going to eat one of their tankmates just because they haven't eaten for a day or two.

stuffing them full of food once or twice a day will keep them pretty lethargic so they won't be as aggressive towards each other, but i also feel that overfeeding is a big factor when people complain about how "boring" their fish are.

i feed all of my fish, including pygos, on a completely random schedule after they reach a few inches in length, usually once or twice a week, and i have never seen issues caused by hunger.

Joe, mine pygos are around 4-5" (the piraya might be 5-6")in size now, think it's about time to start feeding only couple times a week? I've been feeding once a day for about a week or so now, before was twice a day when they were still small.

dude my advise would not to be puttin all that live plant **** in i made that mistake. if ur not to serouis about the fish then dont. cause u really have to keep up with the water changes like do twice a week. idf not the plants make like a white cloudy mess along with the p's and it takes a long time to get the tank clear. i had a nice tank with long grass and alot of real plant my tank is a 12g. and it was a pain to keep clean. espcally when they eat alot of live foods like mice and ****. now i have just 3 slate rockes and 2 fake plants in the middle and my tank looks bad ass. i have 5 red bellys about 8 inches and 2 caribes about 13 inchess. most of the time they dont get along.
