i also have a cabelas pro guide IM6 rod would i be able to catch 20-30 pound stripers and catfish with it on my rapala jointed shad raps?i have a bleeding shad and a shad color varient for the lures or should i go with the ugly stick with the 20 pound test?

also will a ugly stick striper with 12to20 pound test work for average to 20 pound sized striper and catfish?

Honestly I wouldn't go ugly stick because they are kinda cheap but I would get a 10-20lb rod for both. You don't want yo overkill and the same time underkill. For the striper rod I would go with 12-17lb mono and strictly mono for casting purposes braid will get wind knots every cast then tie a spro swivel from 75-150lb range to a 40lb test flourocarbon leader. For the cats I'd go 30lb braid then the same spro swivel to probably the same leader. Hope this helps

ugly stiks may be cheap but there's a reason they've been around forever, they're damn near indestructible and they catch fish! don't really understand your comment about braid getting wind knots though.... as long as you choose a diameter that is compatible with your reel and know what you're doing with it the lack of memory produces substantially less wind knots than mono.

will 12 to 20 pound test on the ugly stick striper be okay with average stripers and catfish and maybe up to 20 pound stripers?

yes that will be sufficient. if you do go braid i would use 40lb test with mono 15-20lb test should be more than fine as long as you don't try to completely horse the fish in and have your drag set right

Have you ever casted off a boat or casted into the wind with braid? I primarily saltwater fish and talk to anyone that has ever casted into the wind on a boat or the surf the wind knots you get in your line are unbelievable. Two to three cast you will have the biggest birds nest. Look it up its a problem with the braided line. Don't get me wrong bottom fishing for anything like flounder braid is what you need. You can feel every hit the contour of the bottom and no stretch but when it comes to casting trust me stick with mono.

If you get wind knots while casting with braid, it's something your doing that isn't right. It could be the set up for what your throwing, could be the way your casting it in a certain situation and etc. I use braid just fine on the surf here at San Francisco Bay Area chasing for stripers. Casting miles on 30lbs braid with a 25lbs leader. Using stripers plug on a 11' surf rod...works great for me with no wind knots. Braids are the best for long distance cast if you were to ask for my opinion. The only thing I can understand with wind knot is what your casting is too light, and the wind picks it up like a balloon. Mono is a tab bit heavier, helps cut through the wind if your using something light.
