Bichir tank mates and plants

What they said. Also, I would make sure the Congo Tetras you buy are males. They are larger and much more beautiful than the females.
Noooo don’t but males. I would but 2 males to every 6-7 females. My males killed each other off over and over again. Key is ratio; way more females than males

Wow. When I bought Congo Tetras, I kept a dozen males and didn't have any aggression issues. How many males did you have? It could be you had too few, and the aggression wasn't spread out enough. Also, I'm not sure female Congo Tetras get large enough to survive being in a tank with an adult delhezi bichir without getting eaten. Albeit, I've never owned females.

If you have concern about dithers getting eaten, have you considered just adding more Senegals and having no dithers? In my experience, Senegals are pretty active and will swim around in the middle of the tank and sometimes come up to breath air.

If you want pricier and flashier mid-level fish, perhaps Discus? Cheaper alternative might be Angelfish, which is widely available. These fishes are higher bodied and tougher for a bichir to swallow, and if you vary the type of pellets you feed (floating + sinking), they probably would not out compete the bichirs for food. These fishes get bigger along with your bichirs, so it would be important to maintain good water changing habits.

I think I had 6-7 at some point, maybe more. I guess it’s hit or miss

Do you All think I could also put a rope fish or two in a 75 gallon with the two senegal bichirs and the delhezi bichir
