Bichir with cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive owned multiple bichirs and are almost always non aggresive a few tubes for them to destress in and teach them to eat during the day. be careful an adult bichir like a bigger mouthed ornate c an eat lots of stuff

I've got a tank with an endli, 3 palmas buettikoferi, a delhezei and a Texas cichlid. They are all best of friends. There are several large caves in the tank, yet they all pile up in this one small cave with the Texas literally laying sideways across the polys' backs because he doesn't really fit in there.

as long as they aren't small enough to be snack to the cichlids and not large enough to make a snack out of the cichlids then i find bichirs and cichlids go very well together, they all tend to do their own thing and not bother each other at all
I agree, but thru experience i fave found that bichers are aggressive feeders and they can take nice bites out of other fish.

yeah i dont doubt it, but the ones i have kept so far havent messed with anything that was a lot larger than their head, but i haven't kept any of the big guys, ive only kept sens in the past and my delhezi is still a juvie at only about 6in, i have also found that they will go after fish that act more like prey like tetras darting all over than a cichlid of same size that swims calmly, but then my del has eaten JD juvies i put in and one was twice the size of his head (but i put them in there for the purpose of being eaten, i have a small severum in there that he could easily eat and he doesnt even try for some reason...)

That would be quite a sight to see.

my bichirs and cichlids get along just fine. orinate bichirs are more aggressive from what i've read so just keep an eye on fins

THIS....

The morning after I acclimated my baby ornate (2in) into his 10gal growout, my betta had most of his anal fin ripped off...

I know bad idea with the betta:duh:

hopefully the ornate wont be to agressive for these guys.. id be very unhappy to see agression from that fish haha. but if so i guess id just have to get rid of em. :/

do you guys think an ornate would be alright with geos or would they bite off their trailers and pester them? i may be getting an ornate in the future but wont if it would bother the juvie geos i am getting this week

After that incident, my Betta seems to stay on the opposite side of the tank away from my Ornates cave. He comes out often and swims around but never to the top like Ive seen Sens. do. He is still relatively small but has grown alot compared to the other Ornates still at the LFS and hes gained alot of girth too. I try to keep him well feed with shrimp pellets and sinking carnivore pellets so that he wont try and eat the other fish with him.
