Can't decide what color sand I should get. I ordered double sided back ground with black and blue. I'm most likely doing black background. But sand is a hard choice, the fish I have are silver arowana , red belly pacu, spotted gar, back dempsey, lungfish, and bout to get some electric blue jack dempsey. I want my fish to pop out instead of blending in .

Black on black for fish colour, but I find it can detract from the tank aesthetics; if you also value that.

One of the best combos I like, is black background; with natural gravel or sand.

I have a blue background with white sand. Not too pleased with that combo at the moment as it seems to wash out the fish's color. Thinking of doing a 3D background, but also don't want to go through the pain of emptying the tank and transferring my fish while it is installed,

I always do black on black. It brings the colors out in your fish the most
I don't think this is true. I've owned a tank thats black and black sand and the light colored fish like for example my profile pic gold, red and orang will pop. Other fish like trimac and darker colored fish blend in too much. Most fish defense mechanism is to blend in with their surroundings so having it all black can be bad. I had some fish who looked so bad in my tank and when I put it in my other tank with white sand they were gorgeous.

If I were to do it all over again I would do blue background with white sand.

I have a blue background with white sand and I like it a lot better than when I had black background with pool filter sand.

I as well like both I prefer black background for planted tanks I have used different sand in each and been very happy I have blue background with quarts sand that I like alot, and black background with pool filter sand that look great as well for me it generally depends on the color of the fish, if it will be planted, and my general mood, sand just tends to be what I have on hand as all natural colored sands are visually universal imo.

I have black backgrounds on all my tanks. And most of my tanks have lighter colored sand. I just really like the contrast of the dark background and the lighter sand.
