Brackish Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is the medium between salt and fresh, its slightly more effort than the average freshwater aquarium, but much easier than the easiest salt water aquarium.

Brackish fish tend to be very hardy and forgiving of water parameters, Marine fish are notoriously unhardy unless you have crystal clear water quality, of course compared to freshwater fish. Freshwater aquariums can be easy to maintain if it is just something like cichlids and the tank isn't overstocked or underfiltered.

In general, Brackish is much easier than salt water

I have done one in the past and I find it's not really harder than freshwater it's just adding the right amount of salt and even that's not a science with a good hygrometer

how how do i go about starting a True brackish tank...? is it spendy..what things do i need to get started..what kind of fish can u have in brackish...south, central American,, rift lake..???or totally diff specie's of fish..? im interested in getting started..i always up for trying new things

Brackish water fish come from the intermediate zones between fresh and salt water, usually river estuaries or mangroves where fresh and salt water meet.
sailfin mollies, archerfish, mudskippers, scats, monos, Etroplus suratensus

and some xCichlasoma uropthalmus would be considered brackish, there are thousands of species.
Some juvie fish are temporarily brackish and move to salt with age such as certain groupers, scats, and monos.
There are a few brackish lakes around the world that also contain what you may consider brackish water fish.
The cichlids of lake Natron, or pupfish from the salton sea could be considered brackish, ie Alcolapia alcalicus

First you need to decide what kind of fish you want, that will determine tank size.
If you want something like datnoids, E suratensus, archers or scats, I'd say minimum tank size is 100 gallons (probably larger), because each can get to a ft in length. If sailfin mollies and some small gobys, a tank half that size would work.
