I was just gonna say use a sump at the same level for all you mechanical filtration then pump the water over the tank into your bio filtration and scrap the chemical filtration (IMO its to expensive and bio is way better) ... this is exactly how I filter a 750 and 150 off one filter.. its nice i can fit as many as 30 layers of mechanical filtration in my sump then it is easy to change just remove the dirty ones and throw them away its nice.. but of course about once a month i do a complete tear down of the mechanical sump and clean it completely.... and I only use about 40 gallons of bio media on this setup and its clear.. oh yeah I move about 4000 gph since I removed one of the pumps
I got ya. Not a bad idea. I could turn the tubs 90 degrees and probably get 2 more up there if I strapped them together. So I could run the mech on the outside and spill into the bio. Interesting... I gotta get that into the model and see how it might work. Thanks man!!!!

its awesome since BIO doesnt need maintence put it where it is hard to reach adn put the mechanical in an easily accesible place and its makes it way better
I like it! I realized that the length dimensions on the 50gal bins is exactly the same as the inside dims of the tank. So if I "hung" one inside and mounted one on the outside slightly higher, I could overflow it into the bin on the inside. I could also put a drain plug on the outside mech tub to drain the sludge out as it settles! BRILLIANT!!!! I'm glad you posted this!

here's what I was thinking when you said that. tank 1 would be mechanical, and literally overflow into tank two which is slightly below tank 1, but just above the water line. I think I could do and up flow style mech filter this way, which is good (or heavily debated). I just add a backflow preventer on the supply line. If there is one that doesn't impact flow rate. I was thinking too about adding 2 pumps for supplying the filters. I'd been thinking about that anyway.

Fantastic work!!

I have one question though, are you concerned at all with what the moisture from evapotation will do in your house?? Mold would be my biggest concern.........just a thought. ;)

Thanks. Not at all. If you look back a few pages you'll see the sketch that shows the final design. It's all enclosed. The tops will have sheet plastic to start, but I'm going to put acrylic tops on the top and vent it to the window you can see in some of the pics. So the tank isn't really exposed to the house. The on concern I do have is in the winter, the vent would let cold air into the tank plenum and cool the water. I have considered putting a dehumidifier on the right side of the tank with a collection tub for the evaporated water and an automatic sump pump that comes on when the water reaches a certain level, then pumping the water back in the tank. If I go that route, that would be the primary evaporation mechanism.

DOH! somehow I missed the tops. :)

Using a dehumidifier for the ENTIRE room would be a great idea but DO NOT PUT THE WATER BACK IN THE TANK. The coils used on these are copper and they will eventually kill all of your fish.
But I would get one with an automatic on/off mode and run it on about 55% so that the basement doesnt get that "musty basement" feel.

MORE PICS PLEEEZEE!!!
