Building a 9'x25' pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Progress continues. Finally have the stump that vexed me for about two weeks chipped away. One more good day of digging and the hole should be done.

Progress continues. Striper is in season and which is slowing me down, but I am not going to complain when the fishing is on.:D

The hole is basically done.

The deck plans are final and I am started on it.

I bought 2 new laguna 2900 gph pumps shipped off of ebay for $110, which I thought was a great deal. I am thinking run one from a skimmer and another from the bottom in a DIY prefilter box.

I have a local tackle shop saving mono line for me to use as biomedia in a trickle tower, I also have my kids cutting thousands of drinking straws that I have had sitting around to use as filter media.

I need to break down and buy a liner, EPDM has risen about 35% since I started digging due to oil prices. I am waiting to hear back on several shipping quotes so I can order.

Here is a pic from last week when it was actually dry for a day:

What 10,000 drinking straws cut into small pieces looks like:

Ahh...striper from the river, too bad the season is only 4 weeks.

Removed the old deck and built the first new one this weekend. On to the bridge and then the bottom deck this week so the liner can go in.

I think we will build a bar/table facing the pond that will hide the trickle filters and make a nice place to relax.

are you gonna put like lots of plants around it to make it look really nice?

Hopefully it will.

The shallow area by the deck I just finished is for plants. The fence side of the pond will have a ledge with cattails and a similiar plant we have growing in all the ponds around here that gets about 12' high. (not sure what it is yet) The house edge of the pond and lower end will be covered by decks.

What are the straws for? I wouldn't have thought they did much for filtration if that's what they're for.

I was wondering that too.. Do they do much for collecting .. "stuff" for lack of better words..
