Building My 50,000 Gallon Monster Mega Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A warm welcome to MFK

It's really hard to guess the cost to heat that tank because my heating bill really cover my 15,000 gallon tank and my other 100+ tanks. As well the electricity is a major factor.
I use 2 systems to heat the water (natural gas and back up oil heater) plus individual heaters in some tanks ie. discus, australian lungfish, discus etc. I use natural gas and electricity to heat the air.

For my total for all tanks and the house over the past 12 months:

The electricity runs $400 to $1200 a month.

The gas/oil runs $350 to $1200 a month.

Still less than I expected. Sounds efficient. You have 100+ other tanks?!

Yes, I still have many other tanks ranging from 2g to 809g beside the 15k and 52k.

What tanks and fish do you keep?

Hey Dude. I just wanted to thank you for pointing me to MFKs website. I was searching African Cichlids in Zoo Aquariums on Youtube and I stumbled across your 15,000 gallon tank video. I was blown away by your project and watched it like 30 times..... in a row. I also dragged most of my family members infront of the laptop to show them your amazing achievement. I have kept Africans for a few years, but I am on my own quest now to keep monster fish.

Cheers Bud,

Keep up the good work !!! :clap

if thats how you go big, i want to see your smaller (the 809) set up as well. Iam sure its pretty nice. Do you have any pics/vids floating around?

Sure

The 809 is all glass 3/4" thick that John Petersen the Dainish tank builder built in my basement. It's 96" long, 54" wide and 36" high.

I have African cichlids and bristlenose in it with an 18" tl Mbu puffer.

Here are a few pics. I hope to have some showing the Mbu later this weekend.
