i have only ever seen one of them for sale once!! it looked quite appealing to me lol

Have you ever kept Shark Catfish? (Arius Seemani/Jordani etc )
Yes twice but I had no luck because I believed the advice that they can be raised and kept in fresh water.

My fault

The first Two I got way back in 1982 from Tropic Aquaria Brampton for $2.00 each at 3" and kept one 2 years when it passed away at 11".

The second time I got four from the Glass Zoo in Guelph at 3 1/2" for $4.99 in 1995 and although they (3 of them) got to be 12" they also died because of lack of salt.

They can be kept in fresh water when young but really need brackish water and then ideally full marine as adults.

I killed them.........

They are also called Sea cats, Columbian sharks and bi colour catfish.

Their genus is actually Ariposis (formerly Arius and Haxanematichthys) and the species I had was jordani.

They of course are in the order of Siluriformes and the only catfish I've owned in the Ariidae family.

Have you owned them and what experience did you have?

well thank you ,it was a long trip to washington but i never said them fish were from ted (evil grin), the guy i got them from wanted to remain anonymous :D
Ted is the only one in the USA with the collection of fish you rescued. It's hard to be anonymous when you have a big popular website on your fish. The knowledge and helpful nature he has in promoting the hobby of keeping monster fish is very evident.

One of the nicest people you will ever meet on the web.

I've met his buddy Todd and his wife at Richard Ross's Stingray Convention in Chicago in August 2008 and he also is a fantastic and helpful hobbyist.

visit both at

www.anythingfish.com

It was great that you and your family were willing to drive a few thousand miles to help Mr ANONYMOUS out and really surprising how many big catfish hobbyists there are in Washington State.

You really have an awesome collection of big cats now too.

as far as the trip to nyc my dad did the driving there with my older brother , so they dealt with the tank and the drive but thanks for the compliments
That was one scary trip I was amazed your dad and brother made it. When he described the slow speed he had to go because of the snow storm and bad visibility I could only picture a tractor trailer running into the back of your brothers trailer and pushing it into your dad's trailer and truck.

You and your brothers were great with the pictures of the cities and countryside and almost hour by hour updates on your trip to Washington. Very well done.

p.s would you like to do some fish trading???

ive got a couple extra each 40-44" nigers, 36-40" rtc x tsn hybrids, 36" marble cats
Thanks for the kind offer and you really have monsters.
You have great fish but I am pretty happy with the guys I've got too.

I still have 5 of my seven Oxydoras niger

The 5 I've still got are:

Two I got in 1992 at 4" from Aquarium Center (Dennis Hare) Randellstown Maryland for $11.99 each in 1992.

One from Pets Plus (John & Fred) Lockport NY at 3" for $12.99 in 1998.

One from The Fish Place (Jake) North Tonawanda NY at 5" for $19.99 in 1998.

And a gift from Randy and Dorothy English of the Oxford Fish club in 1999 at 13".

I did own a hybrid for a few years that I got from a hobbyist as a rescue but it died in 2004.

What species of "marbled catfish" do you have ?

Welcome to MFK

I like the fish you have and the indoor pond you are building sounds nice.

Pleas show me some pics when it is up and running.

The Phractocephalus hemioliopterus and the Piaractus brachypomus will really enjoy the swimming space.

arapaimag,

At 2:50 in this video there's a yellow looking fish on the left hand side.

What kind of fish is that?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWHSbu6kLwk

Thanks.
That fish puzzled me too for a long time only because I am not familiar enough with all the Central American (technically North American) cichlids.

I got the fish from Barry McKee of the Durham fish club as a gift in 2001. It is kind of an interesting story. He gave me a pair of fish because he had not been able to spawn them.

The male was about 7" and the "female" was about 5". We floated the bag in the 15,000 for about 20 minutes then released the fish. The male on seeing all the bigger fish in the tank actually appeared to have a heart attack as we watched and sunk to the bottom of the tank dead within 20 seconds of being released. The "female" was fine and sought cover among the rocks and bogwood. There is driftwood in the tank but she preferred the bogwood at the 6 foot depth.

In time the "female" eventually bred with a fish I bought as a Paraneetroplus (formerly Vieja, formerly Theraps, formerly Cichlasoma) sinspila female (formerly synspilus, formerly sinspilum) but appears might be a P. Bifasciatum or a P. sinspila/bifasciatum hybrid.

Yes the "female" was an immature male when I got it. I have the same problem distinguishing sexes when I see teenagers at the mall.

The fish you asked me about is a Paraneetroplus melanurus (I thank Brian Ma of Mississauga for telling me) and is in the last 2 pics.

The cichlid in the first 2 pics is a female Amphilophus urophthalmus.
