Buying first LARGE tank for 2nd floor apartment would a 150-gallon be safe?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The tank went cloudy about 3 days ago, I guess its starting to cycle..

The water temp is 85 (hot in upstairs apartment) I am not sure how much longer its going to stay cloudy, but I'm assuming I CANNOT add fish until the water clears?

I only experienced the cloudy new tank cycle a few times, but this was on a 45-gallon tank with a pair of AquaClear 110's and it never lasted more then about 2-days.

Weeeeeel, if the floor breaks then ya can always take the opportunity to make friends with your neighbor below! ;) Who knows might be a hot chick!

Amazing tank! but I have to ask the question:

why koi?

because in a year and a half all three will be 18 inches long and in need of a new home..

you might be better to look at something that won't get larger than 18 inches.

that way, your beautiful new tank is a permanent home, rather than a temporary one.

hes putting koi in? Ya 85 is to hot for any coolwater fish, I wouldnt go over 77 personally with alot of surface movement.

I know you are sad that you had to close the big pond, but I would strongly suggest reconsidering the koi.

its not just the size, its the sky high nitrates (and possibly ammonia and nitrite depending) that you will be battling in a year and a half..

not sure if even frequent giant water changes would be able to keep the nitrates down with three big koi.

I know with ponds, the rule of thumb used to be around 300 gallons per adult koi, with 'adult' meaning somewhere around 3 feet or so..

inch per inch, if you feed them properly they are probably the messiest fish you can keep..

just don't want to see you killing yourself down the road to keep the water quality in check.

remember: even with the three big filters, all they do is keep the water clear, and provide a home for nitrifying bacteria - to keep nitrites and ammonia at zero.

the final byproduct - nitrates - is not eliminated by the filters..

it might be a battle you may not be able to win..

keep us updated.

your tank looks amazing!
