Buying my first set of tools.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Craftsman hand tools..although as an old mechanic I have to admit to owning a lot of Snap On and Mac, but they are kinda pricey.
Milwaukee drill motors...get the 1/2 variable it will do almost anything you ask of it. You don't need three cheap tools just one good one.
DeWalt 18 volt cordless... you get what you pay for in cordless tools, don't go less than 18 volt.
Skil circular saws...Mag 77 is a good piece
Delta routers, jointers amd planers..although my old Ryobi's lasted a long time too. I don't think the new stuff is as good.
Of course opinions are like bellybuttons, everyone's got one.

If have the funds get yourself a Shopsmith. It is a Table saw, drill press, band saw, lathe, grinder, sander, router, etc..etc... Just inheritated my Father's. :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

Oh and I agree, get corded for your primary tools. Nothing sucks like a battery dying in the middle of a job. Great addition, but not for primary tools IMO.

mkai.. with the risk of getting a flaming from the americans I say go with;

Screw driver; makita 14,4v

heavy duty screw driver/drill; Hilti 36v

keyhole saw (the best translation I could find) bosch professional line (ofcourse) or makita.

regular saw (couldn't find a good translation but the one with the round blade if you want to cut ply): hitachi

with that you get far..

compound miter saw is a MUST HAVE...and a big flat level work bench...you can never have to much work space lol...buy a good drill...you will use it the most...big fan of keyless chucks to...can never find my chuck key...IMO how much you will use it has a bearing on price ..if your going to use a table saw 10 min every 6 months its not worth spending $500 on it...im a big fan of dewalt and Milwaukee ....but unless your contracting or rebuilding a house hard to justify "professional tools"..NOT a fan of cordless...at work weve gone to all dewalt cordless...last 3x longer than mikita..mikita used to be good but the batteries on the new ones suck..

I use my makita 18v (white colored) impact/drill you can get for around 200 for just about everything and when i need power i will go to my milwaukee 28v stuff.
But if this is for home and not jobsite stuff (which sounds like it is) i would just get the little makita kit and a milwaukee magnum corded drill.
For a nail gun id go porter cable, bosch for jigsaw delta for table saw if you can afford one.
sawzalls/ skillsaw id go milwaukee. They have a really nice chop saw ive been drooling over as well but spendy.
Dewalt quality has gone a ton in the last 5 years so i try to avoid it personally.
Rigid brand is decent stuff for home depot brand. the drills tend to be a little underpowered and overly heavy but are at a great price point.
for sanders i like makita or rigid

Remember you get what you pay for. I bought a cheap miter saw, and it is nice for the most part, but I have to square it frequently. If I had to do over I would get a better one.

ive actually grown to prefer a jet bandsaw for most of my work. get a nice thick blade and a scrolling blade and ur golden. its not really portable but my table saw and miter saw arent being used nearly as much now. the best drill ive ever used was a dewalt 18v lithium ion xrp hammerdrill but its kinda pricey.
