Can Bluegill or Pumpkinseed Sunfish Live in a 75 Gallon tank?

Hey everyone,
I'm setting up a native aquarium i my 75 gal. tank. I've kept and bred CA and south american cichlids for years and years now but ive never kept fish species that live in my own back yard! There is a public pond a town away from me that has a huge population on bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish. I have my fishing license obviously and bluegill and pumpkinseeds are considered "Bait fish" and can be collected from the wild so as long as no one follows me home and sees me put them in my tank, i should be all set. My plan is to catch some young ones which are all over the place, as they will be more adaptable to aquarium life. My question is how many bluegills and/or pumpkinseeds can live in a 75 gallon for the duration of their lives? I've seen some pretty large bluegill and i don't want to cram them into my tank in an unhealthy way. Should i keep only pumpkinseeds or only bluegills? What combos could i do between the two species and how many could i keep? give me some ideas for stocking options regarding these two species..
Thanks!!

Depending of size of fish start with 5-7 fish. In case on dies or what not.

okay, whats your opinion on bluegills vs pumpkin seeds? will they do fine mixed with eachother or sould i do only 1 or the other? which species is more aggressive?

I have mixed sun fish, bass, blue, crapie, and so forth together. Just mix what you want together. I really am not a huge fan of blue Gill much anymore. I would only keep a couple of them and most of other Fish.

:iagree:
after awhile bluegills tend to get boring, I would go for having more pumpkinseeds then bluegill

I have two sunfish in a 40+ gal. Sunfish generally stay smaller than gills and all the CA sunfish I have seen were smaller than our eastern bred fish. In a 75 three fish (4 at most) should be able to live comfortably and grow to old age (4-5yrs). I have had my one for close to 3yrs now and the other just about 2yrs.

My sister kept 5 bluegill, And a baby cat in her 75gal for years.
She also had a few large crays in there for a while, Until she woke up
one morning to one of the scratching at her bedroom door.
They made there way to the goldfish pond after that.

Spike:grinno:

sweet! thanks guys! so could i do like 3 pumpkinseeds and 2 bluegills? or maybe 4-5 pumpkinseeds? I'm not sure i can't decide lol, will it matter if they are all males? I know which cichlids that can get very very tricky if their all males but im not so sure with sunfish. With my tank size would it make more sense to keep pumpkinseeds rather than bluegills? could all the pumpkinseeds be male? or would they beat on eachother?

I wouldn't put any bluegill in a 75. the only reason they went in my 90 was the upgrade to a 245 was guaranteed. a bluegill can reach 16", a little too big for an 18" wide tank.
pumpkinseeds top out at 12ish" and like to hang out in a small groups of 2-4 fish. they would be pretty good in a 75G. the only major problem (besides a particularly aggressive fish) would be if you get a mating. then defensive parents could kill off the others. if you can manage to get all males or all females I doubt there'd be a problem.
longears would be good in there too. you could go with 8 or 9 since they only get 7 inches and the higher numbers will help spread out aggression. look at my more sunny pic thread in the media lounge to get a look of my louisiana longears from zimmermans.

only126db- bluegill are sunfish.

Good luck telling the difference between sexes.
