Im doing a 2nd tank, gonna be a puffer only tank, now the puffers at petsmart, they arent true freshwater puffers are they? Dont they require salt at some point? If so how much and whay kind of salt do I need to put in there? thanx!!!

They will just get more puffers with that money, who will die because most people who pick up a cute GSP will have killed it. Get a puffer at a M&P store that knows their stuff

The only trouble is that all the hobby stores are on the other side of town, way other side lol it sucks but there are lots of pesmart's, are there problems with their puffers?

they are freshwater

Common Puffers:
Dwarf Puffer: Freshwater
Auriglobus Silus/Modestus: Fresh (I can guarentee you that it's not these)
Figure 8 Puffer: Brackish
Green Spotted Puffer: Brackish/low end marine

There really is no puffer that's good for beginners IMHO, so if you're planning on getting one, hope you have a bunch of experience.

Better to get a puffer at a M&P (Mom and Pop/ family owned) store than a chain/retail store. A M&P store is less likely to sell a puffer to an inexperienced hobbyist in the puffer area.

What exactly is so much different about caring for a puffer than a cichlid or a run of the mill tropical fish ?

Well, Puffers are very aggressive (and annoying fin-nippers), that can usually not be kept in community aquariums, even with other puffers. Also, obviously, puffers puff, so they are potentially dangerous. They are scaleless (similar to clown loaches) and require extra care when changing temperatures, doing a water change, or treating for ich.
