Can someone advise me on petsmart puffers?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey everyone! I am new to the forum. I have recently purchased a Fahaka Puffer fro my daugher (which means it is mine). I had been warned by the pet store clerk about the aggressive nature, so I was prepared for the solo tank status. I think that they were wrong about the feeding frequency though. Could someone tell me how often and how much I should be feeding him. Also, are they totally freshwater, or should their tank be slightly brackish?

Totally FW. How big is it?
FEEDING PUFFERS

He is only about 3in long. I was a little concerned about his inactivity, so after reading ALOT :), I checked ammonia and PH levels. The ammonia is 0, the PH is 7.2,and water temp. is steady at 76.

I was also wondering if it is ok to leave his live food in the tank with him to eat when he wants it. For example, I bought some ghost shrimp for him, can they live with him until he eats them?

Does he need any salt added to his water? Some articles say they are brackish.

Unless ghost shrimp are gut-loaded with food, they are basicly non-nutritions (mostly water). Also. Ambush predators, don't swim much (mostly laying around under the sand) so they don't estend much energy--needing infrequent feedings.

So you are saying that the Fahaka puffer is an ambush predator? Would that be why he lays under his favorite plant most of the time? I was worried that he wasn't swimming much. Thanks for the heads-up on the ghost shrimp.

They can lay in wait to ambush their prey or go off hunting for it.
