Can we talk PH?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It has been a while since I posted here. I am overdue/

You would think if you have water that is virtually pure that the pH would be neutral. And you would be mistaken. I know this because for a number of years I have had an RO/DI unit I use to make water for a tank of Altum angels. My current unit is a 4 stage which has a sediment and a carbon module ahead of the RO and DI modules. I also have hand held TDS meters and one permanent 3 way digital on the tank. It measures a choice of conductivity or TDS, Temp. in F or C and pH.

I have no problem making about as close to 0 TDS water as one can at home. But the pH is never at 7, it is always an acid reading. The reason for this is air. This contains an assortment of gasses, one of which is CO2. So, unless one has a way to isolate the water one is making from contact with the air, that water will absorb some amount of CO2 along with other atmospheric gasses.

When carbon dioxide (CO₂) dissolves in water, it reacts to form carbonic acid (H₂CO₃), which then dissociates into bicarbonate ions (HCO₃⁻) and hydrogen ions (H⁺), lowering the pH and making the solution acidic

I discovered this the first time I put the pH probe on my 3-way into the pure water in the mixing cn but before I added the tap water to complete the mix.
