what kind of catfish/skumsucker can i get for my pond that will survive winter, its going to be about 13000gallons and 4-5 feet deep at its deepest with a sandy rocky bottom with about 10-20 koi and i would like to get some kind of catfish to clean the algea off the rocks and just something else in there asided for koi and goldfish.

and did i mention that it would be nice if it looked good too ad if it wasn't a dull gray...

You are going to be overstocked with that many koi in the pond IMO. Besides, my albino channels never touched the algae.

IME, the two temperate water bottom feeders most commonly sold for use in ponds are the albino channel cat, Ictalurus punctatus, and the Chinese highfin banded "shark", Myxocyprinus asiaticus.

Here's fishbase info on the channel cat, which is pretty drab unless you get an albino:

http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/speciesSummary.php?ID=290&genusname=Ictalurus&speciesname=punctatus

Here's some info on the highfin banded shark:

http://www.csupomona.edu/~jskoga/Aquariums/myxocyprinus/myxocyprinus.html

Of the two, only Myxocyprinus asiaticus is known to feed on algae. Both species get large, as indicated in the above resources. Hope this helps.

I agree that if you want algae gone, hi-fin banded sharks are you best, if not only, bet. the docs have them, I think.

One of each:D

I agree..... i think the rule is 1 koi per 1,000 gallons.

It's 2-3 koi per 1000 gallons, so your tank can hold about 30 koi. If you got channel cats, the problem is, you will never have any new koi. One of my posts states that Koi can live over 100 years, so they could all live out their lives in your pond, but you won't get any fry. Any koi under 5 inches is game for the catfish.
