screw that

my rule is 2 koi per 1000 gallons

wouldnt make sense to keep one in 500 gallons with the space of a 1000 gallons you could keep 2:D
like I said, that's just what I thought... wasn't too positive on it.

thanks for all the replies im reading through thosesites now, and this pond is almost 40 feet long and about 15ish feet wide, i think i'll have enough space for 20 full size koi(even if they get 3'+), besides with the new plans the filter sould come out about 4'X5'X6' with uv sterilizers (since its in direct sun light), so i think iwill be able to look after them that way, and like i said i kind of want some thing to offset the koi/goldies(most likly i will not have goldfish but you never know) unfortunetly i would like to have the koi breed so i might have to forget the cat i didnt think of this, thanks for pointing it out.

is there some thing that i can get that wont eat my new koi?, although its not like they will be pure any more since i want some platnum/ butterfly and marbled ut mostly butterfly koi, people dont give them enough credit.

originaly i wanted to keep golden algea eaters but they dont winter well and i would never be able to catch them and they would end up in fishy heaven.

Add gambusia and bitterling to keep mosquitos under control, and everyone will love the free food they pop out every 3 weeks.

Also, get a lot of plants (for the Koi fry) and to pull out nitrates. With a UV sterilizer, the bioload in the pond increases slightly.

wouldn't 3' long koi find bitterlings and gambusinas delicious?

It depends on how many are in there. You can order a lot of them and some will survive. Gambusia are small but have an attitude, and bitterling are fast if I am correct. Koi are big and slow and would rather suck stuff off the bottom.

you're right, they aren't very predatory fish, really. bitterlings are quite speedy, faster than the koi, and gambusinas breed like mad.

lol well koi are just pretty carp after all and all carp do is suck on rocks(or your toes) and the the lake/river bottom. i know they do eat other fish but the other fish would have to be dead of near dead, i dont eaven think koi have teath? not exacly monsters but i have seen pic of monsterous koi... im just looking for something i can put in that wont die or kill that will live long and offset the koi, a koi pond is cool enough as just a koi pond but it would be nice to have something else in there, and im planning on putting some of my 200 mollies to controle the unwonted insects and try to remove them later(try...) they are starting to croud my community tank and i realy dont feel like gong to my lfs, and begging them to take my mollies. my cichlids are to tame to eat them or my excess female guppies... i baby them too much. on a side note they now only take the tetra colour bits, they totaly ignore any frozen foods but KILL for crawfish and ghostshrimp.

if they are some of the more temperate mollies, the may survive the winter.

I think the reason they prefer shrimp to fish is because most of them eat a diet primarly of crustaceans in the wild.

I doubt it about the mollies since they are susceptible to Ich and you might risk it will all of them in a pond where you can't manipulate the temps. If you are going to do that, add a UV sterilizer. Gambusia are really, really cheap which is why I suggested them.
