By the Beach!
Came home yesterday to see one of my pairs of Cichlasoma sp. "La Palma" guarding eggs! I caught these guys December 2010 on my collecting trip to Uruguay. This is a species similar to Cichlasoma dimerus but found a couple hundred miles away from the nearest known location of C. dimerus. I've included some photos of where I caught them and as you can see its just a 2 acre mudhole. The male is about 2.5-3" and female 2.5". The male is the one showing off and chasing off the other tankmates while the female guarding the eggs. I'm planning on pulling the fry once they start wiggling

Awesome, and that fact you collected them yourself, even cooler. Crazy that they came out of that muddy puddle haha, it doesn't even look like it holds water year around.

Thanks! The pond is spring fed so its around all year. We were there during the dry season.

Awesome Armand - I've got some of these guys as well - gorgeous acaras!

Anything in particular seem to spur them to spawn?

Matt

Thanks Matt! Did you get yours from Peter? The pair has been together for over 6 months now. I recently have been feeding them live black worms along with NLS. Also I added a heater about week ago to bump up the water temp so I think the combo got them in the mood :naughty:

Yes - I got 3 from Peter as little ones (I think all females)...and one from Felipe (definitely a male last trip).

There are two that hang out all of the time and beat the crap out of the other...

I've been feeding them with live red wigglers (composting worms) for a couple of weeks, so maybe another couple of weeks of that and a temp bump!

The dimerus I got from you are all pushing 5-6" now. Really beefy - need to separate and breed them as well. I don't think that there are F1s of the Bella Union green ones floating around...

Take care,
Matt

The pair definitely dominated the tank even before they spawned! Hopefully yours will spawn too! Oh I totally forgot about those dimerus. Glad to hear they are doing well! Any chance to see a pic sometime? I think Ken has some from Bella Union F0s but not too sure if he's bred them....

I have a fish very similiar to this at home. I was pretty beat up at a LFS and I nursed it back to health. I will take a pic and maybe you can ID it for me. Congrats on spawn...

Post the pics up! I'm no expert but I'm sure someone can help ID them

Awesome! Nice work  They look a lot yellower than C. dimerus. Beautiful fish!

Thanks Peter!

Nice! It's hard to beleve they came form that little "pond". I agree it doesn't even look like it holds water year round. Very, very cool. GL
