depends on the fish.
my oscar would rearrange the tank, moving plastic plants around daily, live plants would never last, not even when it was small, so I gave up and switched to plastic.
my severums never tried moving plants and liked to sit in them.
I'd start with a substrate you like, add some big wood and some stones and go from there.

here's how my tank looks now, depending on how the driftwood floats.

and some of the inhabitants, members of the centrarchidae family.
Is that java moss on the wood?

Looking forward to it!

Sweet set up! Nicely put together. Are the plants real? Is that a green terror down the middle??
Thanks. The plants are not real, but I've managed to find ones I like. Yep, the fish in front of the plant/driftwood just off center to the right is a GT. Just to the left of it is a Regani.

I would definitely recommend a nice 3D background as I feel it makes ALL the difference. My next setup will have one for sure...

Great tank! Gave me some awesome inspiration for my 33 Ram community tank Im going to be setting up!

I'm really interested in the 3D backgrounds, do you have some links on how to build some? Or do you buy them?
I built mine for my 47Column :D Actually pretty easy to make.
