Cichlid average size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everyone for chiming in but I was asking what is the average size, that you can personally vouch for, in captivity? I know that we can argue 'til Kingdom Come about how big they get in the wild, that's not going to solve anything but get a lot of people riled up, that wasn't my intention. Also I was just using Dovii and Umbee as examples, since they are the largest commonly kept cichlids in captivity.

Well, as pointed out, the actual average size a dovii gets to in an aquarium is probably incredibly shameful for the hobby.

The real "average" is probably closer to a foot with the number of people keeping them in 12-18" wide tanks until they die, but near max size should be attainable for dovii and most other large cichlids in a 8x4 or bigger footprint.

As with many popular large growing species (dovii, jag, oscar, arowana, clown loaches etc) a rather large number of them never make it into suitably sized tanks where they are able to reach their full potential. So IMO the answer to your question comes in two parts;
A: What is the average size you should expect a male dovii to grow to in an aquarium? ~20", at a guess.
B: What is the average size of aquarium raised male dovii at the time of their death? Not as big as they could be...

Thanks King and David R, that's what I was looking for.

There is actually a VIDEO of the entire trip, being caught, weighed, measured, verified.
I suggest you look it up on youtube.
I am sure somebody here already knows and could post it. If not, I will find it tomorrow and post it for you.

By out dated, do you mean that the information there was correct at one time, but there is newer information (for example, species names have changed?) Do you have a better forum you'd recommend as I am always trying to keep current on cichlids.

thanks for the tip and any info you have

cheers

Although on this particular issue, MFK seems to coincide with cichlid-forums on Dovii.

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?160496-CA-SA-Profile-thread/page2 Dovii @ 30"

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?552316-Who-has-the-BIGGEST-Sa-Ca-cichlid Some people on MFK seem to agree that Dovii's in tanks can get to 26"

I mean the info is very old and a lot has changed with American cichlids. These profiles are at least 10 years old. A lot of people are on the same forums, but they all aren't ichthyologist. I would say the internet in general provides false info or outdated info, and I wouldn't just limit this to fish. Cichlid-forum is good if you like convicts and JDs which the site really started to bore me, so I don't go there anymore.
The best site to get up to date info is The Cichlidroom Companion. A lot of members actually work in the field and publish real studies done on the fish. Some are very advanced fish keepers that are more interested in the science and natural biology. They don't care about which fish has the biggest teeth, which is the most aggressive or anything else juvenile.
Also the American Cichlid Association is a good site too for the same reasons.
