HI to all. im new here and live in south africa .love this site!!
ive read ppl saying in this forums that there are midas, dovii , mayans etc in the lakes of florida. wow !! can anyone please enlighten me? do guys collect from the rivers ? i know alien fish are neva a good thing but ........ free fish?lol

Unfortunately there are foreign cichlids in southern florida. They tend to survive better in canals because they are more likely to be eaten by huge fish in the big rivers. Plecos are a problem too. Although all these fish are fun to see!

I wonder if any cichlids can be found in Californian Rivers?

I heard there are some that were released by their owners. Now there is a good population in some places but are considered invasive.

Ive even heard of some cichlids living in a stream here in Colorado. Apparently, there is a hot spring that keeps the water warm enough for them year-round, so they are even reproducing! I believe they are some kind of tilapia. I'm not sure of the exact location, but I will try to find a link!

hey thers a spring were texes convicts and some hybirds live here with guppys its always warm

There's a good website that details all of the non-indigenous fish species in the US... you can search by state or species name:

http://nas.er.usgs.gov/taxgroup/fish/default.asp

At the top, go to Database & Queries, then NAS Database, then Text Queries. This will let you type in a Genus and/or species name. You can also browse the full list. If you click the "Collection info" button next to each type of cichlid, it'll list all the states where they've been found and if they're established (breeding) or not.

I live in Florida and I've seen tons of fish while in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. I caught a bunch of port cichlids in a retention pond when I was a teenager. I've always wanted to go back and try to find some cool stuff.

I talked to some friends last week who said there wasn't a pleco to be found after the hard freeze that we had. There was a week of temperatures below 30F and a ton of fish died, both on fish farms and in canals/lakes/rivers. My guess is that it could have wiped out a bunch of the cichlids, too.

Yes hot springs in Utah and Nevada have a few tropical fish in them from people letting them go. FL has the most due to many USA fish frams are there and some fish get out. Also the warm temps let the fish live so people will set their fish free. People call it "dipnetting" when they go out and catch these "wild" Tropical fish.

invasive fish or other animals that are intruduced are not cool. They do more damage then good. This cold snap has killed off many of the Invasive animals/fish in FL. This has also killed off many fish in the breeding fish farms. People have talked about this might bring the price up for these fish. Like the price of OJ will go up.

Sorry for going off about it.
