Cold hardy cichlids?

In Portugal we have a lot of Chanchitos in temps way below the mentioned 12 celsius in winter

Thanks Miguel.

Just looked these up. Wow, looks like mother nature has done this already! These fish seem like they can live in 50 degree water for some period of time at least. Even raise kids.

Cichlids are a pretty amazning group of fish.

Parts of Uruguay can get mighty chilly in the winter. I wouldn't doubt that it can dip into the 30s from time to time...but not be sustained at that low of a temp for any time period.

Chanchitos and Uruguayan pikes are pretty darn tough fish!

Matt

12 C = 53 F. Water temperatures in the northern US get down to the 30s. A 20 degree difference is huge.

Cool it guys, please.

There are also cichlids endemic to Israel and Jordan, where snow is not unheard of, genus Tristramella.
The reason I believe cichlids didn't radiate to more northern climates in their eons of evolution in the Americas, is not so much cold, but that they suffered competition from already established species such as bass and sunfish that dominated similar habitats of the north may have otherwise lured cichlids, before continents were bridged.
