This sump set up has about 200 gallons of water volume. Which is why the nitrates are still in the teens.

The algae scrubber is in getto mode. I do have a 10 watt LEDS and some 3 watt Cree led red grow lights in the mail.
It might be a month or more until the more permanent scrubber will be operational.
Hence the single sided tin foiled back. Vinyl hose. 10 minute thrown together.
I am flowing 70 Gph, on a 7" long scrubber. The back side has been hot glued with tin foil. So all the water flows on the bright side.

3 weeks of scrubber growth, Nitrates have been less than 10ppm.
3 full water changes in two weeks, to irrigate with.
My tap water is still around 10ppm.
Copods are back in good numbers, and reproducing in scrubber sump.

Out with the old 2700 k 23 watt CFL, and in with some of Santa Monica Gem LED Submersible scrubber lights.

3 grams dry food per day.

So, are you switching over to an algae scrubber instead of the carbon dosing?

Also, as I understand it, keeping the nitrates low is only part of the reason water changes are needed. I understand that they are also needed to keep things like the TDS under control. Do either of these methods deal with that aspect? If not, can you please explain the reasoning behind using the carbon dosing or the algae scrubber in place of water changes? Are you just focusing on the nitrates?

Thanks for posting all of your results!
