In my 80gal my green terror M and convict F have been breeding. The convict is well over two years old - I'm not sure of the terrors age, but I bought him when he was relatively the same size as the convict, earlier this fall. I knew it was possible that they would try to breed, but I obviously didn't think it would happen.. but low and behold, they're on their fourth clutch this year.

The first clutch hatched but no fry seemed to survive - the terror male was eating some of them. The second clutch had about 10 survivors - some of them are still in the tank, and I mean they're cute, but Im likely only going to keep one of the nicest ones to throw in another tank.

I destroyed another egg clutch the other night as well... If this keeps up I'm going to have to seperate the two but I'm hoping once the terror grows out (he's just starting to exceed male.convict size) their mating behavior will hopefully subside. I have an Oscar in the same tank so he's slowly been picking off the babies as they're getting big enough to see now ?

Either way, I thought this has been pretty interesting to see develop - Im also not trying to condone hybridization, this has just been kind of an odd experience that I hope ends soon haha.
These babies are true their parents - I didn't know baby fish could be so mean to each other! When it's food time they're constantly squabbling and I can't imagine what evil awaits them in adulthood. Hence.. I've dubbed them deathrow convicts lol. I'm not sure these fish could be in a tank with any other fish, and personally, I don't think they're worth having a dedicated tank.

But of course, Ive still attached some pictures of the babies! Any advice/comments appreciated

I think this is a never say never moment for me. Never would have thought the two species could breed.

This changes my entire perspective on things
I thought acara type things just couldn't hybridize outside of other acaras

I've always liked convicts but I know how notorious they are for breeding, but I never thought they were that good at breeding. The whole idea of having a lone convict in the tank was precisely to avoid this situation...

Flint town!
Grow a couple out see what they look like. Maybe they will be able to breed (possibly not) might end up with the new hotness! Who ever designed flower horns had to start somewhere. Like I've said before I don't have anything against hybrids but I usually don't care for them either. I get why alot don't like them.

Posting an update! Decided to let them live and see how it goes. There's 4 left in their original tank and five in another tank for now. Their coloring is starting to come out and it's adorable!

One of them has a stunning black/blue/white scheme, while some of the others have yellow in their fins as well. What do you think? ?

Pretty neat looking so far, can't wait to see how they will look once mature. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.
