If anyone wants a complete Convict setup, I would suggest a 100g...Stick in two males and three females...GO all out with driftwood and plants...Your tank will look like a zoo in one year....Keep a 55 on hand to growout young for sale or feed....I tried this 100g setup once, but ended up flipping the tank into a Piranha growout....

somtimes aggresion in the male will rule out the breeding process..... i would seperate them for a bit or even take them out throw them in a bucket for a little bit..... clean the tank good rearange some stuff and throw some driftwood in there.... for some reason i have had cons go nuts for this stuff... my cons always lay the aggs on or near the driftwood

Due to a school project I had bred many pairs of convicts.
They are fairly easy to breed.
Temperature of 25-26.5C;
for our pair, we only provide less than 10g for pair (17.5 g for two pairs with a divider in between)
with half flower pot, some plants and bubbler
substrate size are small enough so the fish can decorate the way they want.

some fish just don't get along well. Don't wait until the fish is killed. Remove the fish if it doesn't seem to work out (observe how the pair interact closely once you have introduce them).
If the fish do pair up, you can see eggs in as short as 4-5 days you introduce the fish. But we had the case where it took over a month for them to breed.

Female of 6 cm (almost 2 inches) are sexually mature; usually has red/green/blue/yellow colouration on the belly
Male of 10 cm (almost 3 inches) are sexually mature; less colouration, has small dots on the caudal fin; grow much bigger

most eggs hatch in 3 days (can take up to 5 days)
and they will stay as wrigglers (with egg sac) for about 3 days
once they are in free swimming fry stage, they should be fed twice a day

make sure to feed sufficient amount of food to the parents, otherwise the pair might decided to eat their eggs/wrigglers (lost several brood that way)

Once a female had laid eggs, it takes her a minimum of 21 days to produce another batch of eggs. By this time, the previous batch of fry should be just around 1 cm. Once the fry are old enough, they should be removed since I found my fry to be nibbling on the newly laid eggs. When the fry are large enough, they will even eat their own siblings. Junior convict cichlids are nature predators of convict fry.

It takes approximately a year for them to grow to 2 inches long.

Plus don't forget to do a weekly 1/3 water change!

They like to be Convicts.
They don't like things too perfect.
Give them a few choices in housing. But half bury it so they have to dig it out.
That plays a part in them bonding and showing off.
If no eggs after a few days, bury it again. Don't feel bad, they don't have anything better to do anyway.
Sometimes my breeding pair loose interest. I drop in another male (and usually a female)and let them fight it out for a bit. He gets to showoff for his sweety. And she remembers why she fell for the big lug way back when.
A day or two later, eggs.
And if the new couple win, they keep the tank.
She always wins but sometimes she gets a new boyfriend.
Next day, eggs.
They want to make babies. But let them work for it.
I know I get pretty sick of my 'ol lady, until some other hillbilly is moving in.

But you know, if you don't have room to separate them maybe you shouldn't make more.

Also they will breed at less than 1 inch.
The females are ready as soon as they get color on their belly.
But they need a male of the same size.
If he is too big she will be beat up.
I'm not sure how they pick, but my girls never choose the big dominant males.
They might be too aggressive.
Or they are too busy fighting each other to pair up.

When I drop in a new male too get the juices flowing, she will mostly watch but get in a few nips of her own. They defend the area together.
Sweet right?
But if her mate starts to lose she switches sides and attacks the ex.
New boyfriend.
New eggs.
Pfff. Women.
