Cutting Clay Pots??

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but its a place to start.

I see a lot of pictures of tanks with clay pots in them that have cut outs...how is this done?

What I am trying to do is cut the bottom of the pot out so the fish can go in the front and out the back or vice-versa. Or so I can join two pots together by the bottom and make something kinda like a tube, the reason I want to do that is because I think the clay pots look okay, and if I joined them you would not see the second pot, but it would fit perfectly in the corner like I want...

So is there a way to cut them? Or to make holes in the sides??

I use a dremel fit with a grinding wheel. Makes a mess, but it works.

You could also use a hole saw designed for ceramic tile.

............Or a Roto-Zip.Even an engraving tool if you do it right.

Be sure to soak the terracotta pot for a day before cutting. It reduces chipping during the cuts.

I used a tile scoring blade, snapped out the piece, and then sanded the edges...

So basically no cheap/easy way to do it...I have got a multitude of these tools back in NH, but nothing here in IL...I may have to look for an alternative idea now...

i just used a hammer and a flat head screw driver to chisel one in half. i would imagine as long as you take your time this could work for what you need

It took me about 5 mins to cut out the piece and sand it, its really not that hard.

I went down to wal-mart and bought a "hens and chicks" pot. sometimes called a strawberry plant vase. They are made with holes in the sides. 6 bucks.

If you want cheap and easy just use a hack saw. $3 at home depot.
