I just bought some seachem denitrate and gonna build a diy pvc low flow canister and see how the nitrates are going.
I was looking around, and someone has already branded this idea and started manufacturing filters, although they're extremely expensive compared to what you can make diy. They start at $150 for tanks under 20g, and go up to $340 for tanks up to 300g.

I'll probably end up using pothos, an algae scrubber, and a nitrate filter. The less nitrates the better.

I am still testing, back to back, 660 vs 640. Too early to tell. Both have green starting to show.

A anaerobic denitrator, will remove nitrate ,much faster than an algae scrubber. Given a high ppm starting point. Say the tank is at 100ppm, and you want it at zero.
Now starting at zero with fish adding ammonia daily, it will be a toss up as to which one is bigger, the scrubber compared to the denitrator.
One thing to keep in mind, salt water tanks have lots of coral, and a device called a protein skimmer. Which will harvest the 10 billion, bacteria spawned in the denitrator.
In fresh water, protein skimmers don't function properly. However, the Hydra, a freshwater cousin too the sea anemone, will flurish.
Algae is a much easier, mess to contain.

Should be fun to see how both perform.
